Hello, I am a senior and I have a 7th grade trumpet student. He is pretty advanced but just got braces. I just want some feedback for some solos that would be appropriate for his talent and age level. Thanks!

Well, I am in 8th grade and just got braces. My band director wanted me to take a high school class song instead of a junior high one. So, she gave me a class C high school solo. It is called "English Suit" (like sweet, the guy at solo and ensemble pronounced it suit )It is transcribed by R. Bernard Fitzgerald. The piece consits of 5 movements. (I played 1, 2, & 5) It is a great piece to play and challenges a younger student rhythmically, dynamically, and over all musically. The 1st movement is full of staccatos and slurs. The 2nd movement is slower and very expressionant. The third is very jolly at first and then sounds like you are "drunk" lol Then it ends jolly. Tell me what you think.

If you can double tongue, give Concert Scherzo by Arutunian a go. Its not high, very flashy and considering you have braces, there are no long sustained passages on the chops. A tight, short double tongue is a must though!

if they have good sound... throw haydn`s second movement of the first suite in Eb... it`s a beautiful piece, and u can let them listen to Marsalis play it perfectly a few times before he tries... super piece for younger students... (range might be an issue)

I would recomend something of a resonable high standard, but not too hard. If you just see how well you can play with the braces in first, but anyway, i would recomend Pachelbel`s `Cannon`. 1.Because it is of the standard, and 2. I love it!!
Please tell me if you found this useful!! lol

You could also try a couple pieces called "Lyra" and "Razz Ma Tazz." These two are the most popular 7th grade solos at my school.

I would suggest that he play my funny valentine or come in from the rain. There not too low and not too high. I go to Arden Middle and we played come in from the rain at the folsom jazz festival. its not too easy, but it sounds really good, with a full band. He would probably like it.
