are you just starting with playing the trumpet? in an orchestra or solo?
in that case i`d look for student trumpets if i were you: they are a lot cheaper and will be good enough for you the next 5-10 yrs at least.
i play a getzen capri myself. but of course Bach Stradivarius is close to trumpet heaven... and halfway you might catch up with the yamaha xeno

If you`ve been playing trumpet for some time, you might want to go to the store and try different types of trumpets to see what fits you best (same w/ the mouthpiece).

Hi,
I play Getzen trumpet and I`m very happy with mine.
My best advise is DO NOT get a student trumpet because from experience they`re a poor quality.
You wouldn`t go wrong with big name brands. Also best advise is go to a shop and try all types of horns till you find the one.
Also are you a beginner player or you have some experience?

Hi Blackcat,
You`re getting the same question..what level are you at? You mentioned AUDs, so you`re probably in Oz. What city? I can guide you to a good store in Melb. Syd or Brissie. Best/Must try it, but agree with most posts here, avoid the student horns if you can. 1K Aussie bucks will buy you a good quality horn, so you`re in the Intermediate league, or even 2nd hand Bach Strads come along in the Trading posts at that price. Check the papers. I saw one on the Trading Post Internet recently in Melb for about 1200, so you`d probably get it with cash and haggle. By the way a lot of Bach Strads shed their lacquer, don`t be put off by the appearance on older Bach`s. If no dents they can sound great and a pretty good price if you shop around. Some local Brass Bands in Melb actually supply horns, so there are ways of saving dosh as well.

In Sydney the best place to start is the Trading Post, or if you are in more urgent need, then try the Big Brass & Woodwind Warehouse at ULTIMO for 2nd hand instruments.
For a new instrument then a Yamaha YTR-2335 is a very nice Intermediate horn, and will serve you right through your AMEB years. I would try Dicksons Music in CHATSWOOD. James Morrison recommends them, drop his name and you may get a good discount. Normally around AUD$1,000.
FYI A new Bach Strad 37 ML is AUD$4,800 RRP. If you hunt around you can get a new one for about $2,500. So a good second hand horn for AUD$1,000 is pretty good. I would get a cheapie, and keep my eyes open for the Bach. If it`s Mums and Dads money the Yamie is quite a good horn.
Look up www.whitepages.com for the phone numbers. Check your local papers for local Brass Bands as well, as some do offer instruments.
Hope it helps. Keep blowing and best of luck.

I almost forgot...mouthpiece. Use 7C mouthpiece. Look this one up,
http://www.selmer.com/products/accessories/mouthpiece/mouth1.html
A good reference for what mouthpiece does what. But don`t get too stuck on the mouthpiece thingy, you can spend your entire life chasing a sound; in the end use you Brain & mind. I have used the same 7C (Bach)since the ark was built...
Your music teacher will give you sound advice, and can see you play. Listen to that advice on mouthpieces.
