Tuba is easier comparing to trumpet, because the range is lower.

I played tuba and Alto horn for about 2 years before I swtiched to trumpet, that was a mandatory rule in my music school for beginners.

My director`s philosophy was that if beginner students start with the alto, tuba or baritone then they could build their endurance and embachure before they go up to trumpet, trombone or cornet.

good luck

I would say tuba is easier. My friend, Shane (who plays tuba), tried to play my trumpet and could hardly play a note. I then tried to play his tuba. I did get quite a few notes out. Well, I thought this info might tell you something. lol!

my conception is :the larger bore instruments are easier to sound but require a greater voulume of air.another point to concider is the tubing:cylindrical or conical.conicals are less resistant are`nt they ?

Tuba may be easier to get a note out, but to play well, particularly with the skills of Kirk Joseph (from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band), takes as much skill and techniques as trumpet. Same goes for other brass instruments. With each, you develop different groups of muscles.
When in school, and now teaching, I find that some kids begin playing trumpet and aren`t successful, they switched to baritone and did better. That wasn`t necessarily because it was easier, but for a number of reasons. Some people hear the lower tones better and so can better control their playing. There are physical issues, such as lips to deal with as well. Large, fleshy lips have more trouble playing the trumpet, and playing larger mouthpieces can make a big difference. It gets more muscle area involved.

after 20 years playing trumpet I started also to play tuba
because of my community band needs.
It is not easier at all. Of course, I can play tuba for hours
without any problems while for the trumpet the lips get tired
sooner. As for difficulties, if the main difficulty in trumpet
is the high range, for tuba it is the low range, and it is not
much easier to play well very low range pieces with tuba than
high range pieces with trumpet. Also, with tuba and its huge bore
it is more difficult to center the tone and stay in tune.

tuba is much easier than trumpet. i play tuba and i am beggining to play trumpet. the lower range of the tuba is easier to play than the higher ranfe of the trumpet. when i first tried trumpet i could not get a note out. the mouthpiece of the tuba is much bigger so you dont have to tighten your lips as much as you do with trumpet

I am also a tubist and i have played trumpet a little i but find that tuba is pretty hard. i am not saying tuba is easier than trumpet or vice versa but they both have thei strong and weak points. on a trumpet technique comes easier because that is what they are made for, the melody but for tuba it is not as easy for good technique because tubas are used for the most part as oom-pah instruments but also on tuba your lips dont get tired as fast as they do as trumpet so really there is no answer for your question and it all depends on your preference.

I play the tuba & i`ve played the trumpet for 22 yrs., AND I personally think that the trumpet is harder, because the trumpet has to play the melody most of the time, while tuba play the backgground most of the time. I said most of the time, not all of the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(TUBA ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

My place is with the sax, but
when I play brass (I can) I found that, when I started, I could play trumpet OK. then I played tuba, and when I tryed to play trumpet, I could hardly play anything. The mouthpiece sizes are dramaticly different, compare it to a soprano sax and a bari sax. (I was piching on the trumpet so bad nothing would come out)

tuba is actually harder than trumpet, from almost any perspective besides trying to get your first notes out. I started on baritone, switched to tuba after 2 years, and play in high school and my county honor band. Without any type of warmup, i can blast up to and past a C above the staff on a trumpet, while getting a B flat below middle C is a death struggle on tuba, as far as range is concerned. Anything higher than that requires lips in great shape. Technique, playing fast notes, especially ones where it seems like there is no tonal base, tuba is extremely hard. In trumpet, the notes feel more slotted, and the melody is usually discernable. Learning fast, random sounding notes on tuba (before you get the music up to tempo) can sound like garbage unless you have a piano around. Also, there are many sets of fingering (BB, EE, F, etcetc) on tuba to learn, while trumpets only have the standard B flat or the new C trumpets. Tuba does usually have easier music, but that is no indication of the skill reqired to play.

I`ve been playing usic my whole life n i have played on many different instruments. Two of the harder instruments i have played would be the tuba and trumpet. I`ve been playing tuba for a while now and i picked up the trumpet short after. Trumpet is extremely hard to hit the higher not while keeping a good tone and plating the melody. On the other hand the tuba is hard to keep good tone on the lower notes, and considering the tuba plays mostly lyrical pieces in the lower register it takes a lot of control to be able to keep good intonation. So comparing two instruments is nearly impossible, the only way you could really test it is for someone to try 1 lyrical piece on tuba n then play the same lyrical piece on trumpet, and then play a fast melody on both instruments try it out for yourself i have and i found that its near impossible to play melody on tuba because it recquires so much air and because the length of the tuba makes all the notes sound like dah instead of dit or dot.

I played both many years ago. Started on Trumpet and then switched to the Tuba. (due to school band needs).I am now 32 years old and I am finding the desire to pick up a trumpet again. Can I get back what i haven`t used in 15 years.

Tubas and trumpets are nearly apples and oranges, but...

The tuba is much more difficult to play well than the trumpet in it`s HOME register.

I would say that if playing notes on the treble staff, the trumpet is easier to play and for the bass staff, the tuba is easiest. Nearly identical breath/lip patterns are used to play the same note HOWEVER:

The sheer volume of air required and the weight of the valves alone make the tuba more difficult to play. Some of the energy of the player goes into just holding the instrument (which sometimes weighs up to 40 pounds) upright! The amount of musculature used and the distance from one partial to the next are much wider. Just look at the size of a tuba mouthpiece next to a trumpet mouthpiece and you`ll understand the difference. Also, In contrast, trumpet bore size and valves are tiny and provide air resistance which allows trumpet players to more easily play extended passages which require incredible technical facility. The short valve stroke, smaller bore, etc allows the player to concentrate their energy on playing music. The differences are much like the differences between a violin and a string bass.

The parts (for high school band or so on) are often easier than the trumpet parts because of the nature of the beast, but then again that is up to the composer. Playing any instrument only as an accompanying instrument leads to an inferior musician.
