I am happy to hear the other side of the coin that many people started at age 7 or so.
I have a daughter dying to play the trumpet and everyone has told me she is too young,
the band director at the elem. school told me she needs to play a Cornet first
because it is shorter if she starts this young

and so I am confused *I only play the piano*
as if to she is too early to start..........
if she should play a cornet first or what I should do.
She insists she wants a trumpet.

Any insight you trumpet players could lend to a piano playing mom would be appreciated.

Mary.

if her arms are too short to hold it comfortably, maybe a cornet or a pocket trumpet will work better. music123.com has some great deals on pocket trumpets. Read the reviews, they are extremely helpful in figuring out what you will need.

personally, i don`t think your daughter is too young to play the trumpet. many great musicians started in just 2nd or 3rd grade. let her do what she wants, and if she`s any good, that should teach her director a lesson.

hey mary, you are never too young to play an instrument. i know some 5 year olds that play the piano and other instruments. you can never be to young and the music teacher should be proud that he/she has a student that wants to play. so let her play and you could just take her to someone else like at Hollins University or someplace that teaches it, and let her play.
sincerely, yo mama

she might not have short arms, and let her try if she really wants to. i mean not all 5 year olds are short, i know some pretty tall 5 year olds. and i think that age and size should not matter. there are some 20-60+ people that are as tall as a 5 year old, don`t let that hold you back from letting her play and instrument. i think that she should be able to play if she really has the heart for it.

the dude has a point, some really great people start out really young and i think it is a good idea that she should start that early, especially if she feels like being famous for it someday, and it will help her math skills. anything to do with music, such as playing an instrument or singing, helps with his/her math skills. so i would let her, and good math skills help in everyother class also. so let her play!

hey chris, not all people start at young ages. you can learn at all ages, and any body should be willing to help, and who cares if you are famous for it as long as you feel like you are really good at heart then you should beleive that you are good. i am 13 and i am just starting to play the piano, you might think that that is young but really it isn`t.
