Yes it does. Professional trumpets have less resistence of getting into upper register, and smaller rimmed mouthpieces makes you go couple of notes higher. Trumpet and mouthpiece makes know about this, so they make student trumpets or resistent, which is much cheaper than the pro trumpets. Smaller mouthpieces focuses the wind into the leadpipe, and with less effort, it is easy to get higher notes.

what trumpet_er is saying is true. but if your looking for advice on which mouthpiece you should use, your wasting your time on this forum, because only you can tell what mouthpiece and trumpet feel good for you.

Just try a JK Klier 4C mouthpiece. This fits with any trumpet you can find. You will never regret!

Hey Jake, you shouldn`t recommend starting at a decent size and moving to a small mouthpiece unless you point out that you are only talking about playing lead.

jake nelson you`re full of crap. i play lead with range up to an E above double c( yes the c two octaves above middle c) and i started with a umi 5c which = a bach 7c. I moved to a bach 5c a year later and then two years after that i moved to a bach 1.5c... for lead. i use a 1b for wind ensemble. YOU DON"T NEED A SHILKE 12a4a, OR ANY OTHER LEAD MOUTHPIECR< TO PLAY HIGH. yes the shallow cup will help play high notes but your tone won`t be as good. You can just work up your range on a normal mouthpiece and get all the range that you will ever need. If i ever need anything above an e above double c and i haven`t worked up my chops to play any higher by that time than maybe i will buy a shilke mouthpiece. Or i might do something that seems impossible to pretty much every young trumpet player since they`ve been given so much crappy information and i would work
