I agree, also why does range seem to be the most absolute important thing ? The other things are just as important but i hate it how nobody realises because its harder to hear as with range, u can easily tell and it makes the individual feel good i suppose.

Range is just part of the bag of tricks that go into your kit to being a good trumpeter.

I agree with you, and think some people get the notes mixed up. Anything above a G above High C is damn good if you can hit it on call. Most people will have their mouths open on anything above that, for most normal playing. A`lot of Sqeaks, and squeels some people count as a hit....mmmm??

However, there are some very mean players who truly can get to Triple Cs. 2 full octaves above high C. Very rare, and MFs band seems to be full of `em.

A good Pro would be expected to have a range in the G to C above High C, or you just can`t get the work. There are a lot of people that go crazy, I`m still stuck at G-A above the high C, and that`s where I`m happy.

There`s a lot more to playing with a band than just the range.

first I totally agree with you guys range isn`t everything. I enjoy screaming because i feel like it releases emotions, its the same way i feel about improv, when i hit some high note in jazz band it gives me a thrill and its a feeling you can`t buy. At least thats the way it is to me. I really can hit a triple C(squeeking not playing) I can PLAY a double C. that is why i believe the people on this forum if i can do it why can`t they. Plus many trumpet professionals can hit that high so why can`t we? I mean the next generation has to pick up where they left off right? anyway if you wanna here some screaming triple Cs listen to Bud Brisbois or cat anderson, you can hear some great screamers at trumpetstuff.com

I love Cat Anderson too!
Cootie Williams plays some great mute work, and worth a listen, he was in Duke E`s band.

Thanks for the link. And the names to listen to.

range is great when you can play high with a good sound. range really sells when you try to get gigues so it is important that you can hit high notes it`s just a matter of how strong

i can`t stand all the bragging about high notes. yeh its part of playing and show good stamina and support but how many people who say they can hit the top ones really can hold them well.people who actually state what notes they can hit really bug me because it makes paying into a competition which is NEVER what much is about. i agree that in gigs a players range can be absolutely mind-blowing but its usually because of what they can do with it.

i agree with derek range is a great thing to have if you can do it without pinching it out. I mean like keeping your teeth spread about a quarter of an inch apart and being able to just have someone say hit me a double c and you can do it. it is very possible to hit these notes with a good sound and if you know a professional that can`t hit them then he might not have a great range but something we call tone or style and bet that he can do all that really well so people couldn`t care less if his range sucks

its a shame coz most people who play high.........or try to play high.....have an awful tone when they do it! Stick to working on tone and range will come.
