My lips are scarred, what should I do?
My lips are scarred, what should I do?

I recently played extensively and I`m forming too very noticeable scars on my lips. They`re kind of brown/red. I was able to play to a high B/C, but now I can barely hold a normal C without feeling pain. I`ve probably played 7 hours everyday for the past week.

I would say seriously try not to practice as much! You can`t just go from very little practice to tonnes and tonnes! It`s like athletes, they don`t suddenly go and do a marathon without training shorter distances first. You could really damage your lips, i know, i`ve made the mistake before and it`s wrecked my lips for weeks at a time. Just try and ease yourself into it. Start with little time and then gradually, as you feel your lips get used to it, increase the time. I know it`s hard if you have tonnes of rehearsals but just try and rest them when you can.
I would recommend that you use a lip product called Blistex relief cream. I don`t know if you can get it in America but you can in the UK and all of my brass collegues use it too. I put it on before i go to bed and it works over night repairing the lips!! Quite magical really! If you can`t find that product, try any sort of cream lip product. Avoid oily lip care such as vaseline or other balms as i found that they didn`t help and just dried out my lips even more.
I hope this helps you. Sore lips are a pain for us poor brass players but prevention is always better than cure so make sure that when your lips get better, you keep using a good lip care product so that they remain supple and you shouldn`t keep getting the problem as severly

Just noticed that you said 7 hours and i`m sure many people will say that that`s probably less than what profesionals do but i`m not saying that that is way too much for anyone! I do roughly that amount if i can but you need to ease yourself into it first. Hope all goes well.
