Has anyone ever marched a flugel? my band only has 2 mellos this year so I voluntered to play flugel just curious has anyone done this also? My bennefit you might ask basicly a featured solo performance of procal harums whiter shade of pale. we just got done with 2 weeks of band camp and have only performed for one other band and I got a nice response from the brass section. Anyway back to my question has anyone marched a flugel before?

No, never marched a flugel before. The solo parts in marching band music tend to be marked "Flugelhorn," true, but the 1st trumpets always got that, since it`s typically lead.

Mellophones are different, they`re basically marching french horns. I believe they`re in F too. They look like flugels but have bigger bells.

we`re supposed to have a fluegelhorn solo this year.. but like someone said, it`ll probably just go to me or one of the other 1st trumpets.. or one of us might just pick up a fluegel.. dunno..

depends on what the directors want

Hey, Jon

I`m the squad leader for my high school marching band. My director Mrs.Maxwell just told me about flugelhorns last weed! I asked her if I can let my meleaphone players play these because they look nicer. She said no, because they give a entirely different pitch and tone quality. She also stated that they are rare and not many bands in america play them. They are mostly played in bands in Europe.

Your welcome,

Ryan

(P.S.) E-mail back for more questions.

They are rare in marching bands, however they are widely used in jazz. I cant even count how many songs I`ve played that have called for one. (or four) They do not sound just like a mellophone however they are close enough to cover for each other. They are also usually different keys Bb as opposed to F. Some directors like them some dont. I like them cause you can see the drum major over the bell but thats just me. Thanks everyone for your input.

If anyone has sound files of Trumpet Notes- Could you please email them to me YvoHath@wmconnect.com I have a yahoo group - and I Would like to have a section for Newbies or Bginners - so if they are self teaching they could have a frame of reference for the notes. Because newbies are not exactly sure what notes they are getting out. Or if you have a link to page with the sound files please email them to me YvoHath@wmconnect.com - I have found that there is not really any quality stuff on the net for newbies.
