Buy a can of lacquer thinner, use a small artist brush and keep painting a small aria until it softens and remove with a cotten cloth and soft plastic scraper. Lots of polishing with a mild brass polish and a hot water bath and you finish with a spray can of good quality lacquer. The price you save is the cost of mateials minus the cost to have it done which might not be much unless you`re doing several horns and, of course, your ability to spray a runny mess would be a factor.

I recently, had a music store delaquer(3mos.ago)my 25 year old Bach it looks great, but the maintenance on the finish has to be kept up a little more often to keep from tarnishing.
I also don`t know if it changes the tambre of the instrument. I play on a pretty regular basis,(2 wind ens.& 1 orch.) and was a college music student and although I don`t play professionally, I don`t believe the delaquering has made a significant difference in my sound, it is also the consensus of the lead players I`m playing with regularly. I must say I love the look of the horn now, it was like getting a brand new horn all over but you knew the intsrument.

If you have soft lacquer, you can boil it off with very hot water. Most lacquer can be stripped with a chem stripper, though I`ve only been able to get Yamaha off with a fine sanding/buffing process. Why would you want to spray more lacquer on? It kills the tone and looks like garbage.

My band teacher told me that delaquering could cause lead poisoning. Is this true? I`ve already sanded/buffed my yamaha trumpet and I would like to know how I can prevent any lead or brass poisoning.

Ouch! I figure this may be too late, abut If I were you I wouldn`t risk damaging my Bach by a do-it-yourself delaquering job. If it were my horn I`d send it to a pro, such as the Cauldwell Music Co., Abilene, TX.
