Hi,

Anyone here in a junior or senior and still plays the trumpet?

I`m asking just to see how many find the interest at that age.

Most of my friends stopped playing the horns when they because juniors and seniors.

Dave -

I`m a senior this year and still play avidly. I plan on pursuing at least a Master`s degree in trumpet performance with a focus on orchestral and chamber playing, without neglecting the jazz/pop arts.

Current pieces in work (mostly for college auditions)
-Arutunian Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra - Bb
-Tomasi`s Concerto pour Trompette et Orchestre - C
-Charlier`s second stylistic study - C/Bb
-Albinoni Concerto in D - Piccolo

Suffice it to say, I`m still interested in playing.

Aron how long have you been playing trumpet?

I have played for 5 years on and off so my skills are not so good.

This summer was bad for me I did not put a lot of time in to playing and now my chops are not where they were in the winter.

Good Luck

I started playing mid-way through my sixth grade year. I`ve grown up in the Florida school system, so I`m not really up to par with say, Ohio`s standards, but I`m kickin` along, especially considering I haven`t been in my school`s band for a year or so.

I do a lot of gigging around the area and play around two concerts per week (not including musicals) with different ensembles, usually for $$$, which is great. I`m really lucky to have gotten in with such a great group of musicians and players so early on in my career and am even more thankful I`ve been able to participate with so many amazing ensembles.

I`ve played a couple dozen musicals, a whole bunch of jazz literature, and about fifty orchestral concerts in the past year and a half or so, and am extremely excited to head off to college where I can participate with some groups who take criticism from amazing players. I feel I`ve started off with great footing and hope others have had the same oportunities. I know I`m eternally thankful.

Anyway, that`s the jist. You know what I say though - practice, listen, envision and quit thinking to much, and you`ll get your face back together in no time.

Cheers!
Aaron

What the hell is it with everyone and their egos being larger then the Great Pyramid? "I`m regarded as one of the best trumpet players of my school." - good for you, but lemme tell you how effective it is to tell people you`re really good...well, it isn`t.

Cheers!

everyone has a different speed of learning and developing. I was able to hit a double C in 7th grade but I havent used that note untill this year.

As I`ve mentioned a couple times, it doesn`t matter at all whether or not you can "hit" a CC. It`s, can you "play" a CC that matters. I play on a professional level in the area, such as with a couple local orchestras, and am hired by a two local theatres to play musicals, as well as a whole bunch of other gigs including weddings, church services, ect. Out of all of those things, I`ve NEVER had a CC on the paper in front of me. The highest note out of all the music I`ve performed has been a GG, and those are few and far between.

What you should do is set goals for yourself that are realistic. ANYone can "hit" a CC, it`s playing it that`s hard. Don`t let some kid on the internet saying "I can hit a CCCCCC!" scare you - people do a lot of endowing on the net. Do, however, set goals you`re capable of reaching like, say, building your range to where you have a steady high C range, every day, all day, whenever you need it.

I`ve been playing a smidgen over eight years and taking lessons for the last four. I play with a lot of groups on a professional level (as mentioned) and I still have some days where I don`t have a solid high C range all of the time. Does that mean I`m terrible? No, obviously not, as I have been called back again and again by the same groups to play different gigs

It`s part of the playing trumpet. Your body changes from day to day, so so does your playing. Period. It`s important we, as musician, keep our eyes on goals that are obtainable, rather than saying "Man, I`m terrible. I`m fourteen and can`t even play a CC" (which, if I might point out, very few people can do well.)

Keep your head out of the game, envision what you want to sound like, listen to other people (especially the greats like Herseth, Sachs, Ferguson, Severinsen) and mimic. Everything will come together for you in time if you only give yourself a chance.

Cheers!
Aaron

Your planning on playing the Tomasi concerto for your college audition? I wouldn`t recommend doing that unless you can nail it to the wall both technically and musically. One of the things my profesor likes to bring up on occasion is the choice of audition material for students hoping to get into the music school, and he says he always find it funny when the student chooses to show what they cannot do(by playing something like the Tomasi) rather than what they can do (like the 2nd movement of the Haydn). That being said, play whatever you feel like, but keep in mind most professors are much more pleased by a simple piece that is played to perfection, than being put in the awkward situation of listening to a student hack their way through something they might have been able to be play once or twice in their practice room correctly.

HELL NO I`m not playing the Tomasi for my auditions!!! I just like the piece and play through it from time to time for my own entertainment. That`s not to say I don`t do my best at it, but I`m certainly not working on it 100%.

I`ll definitely be playing the Arutunian Concerto and Charliers second stylistic study, as well as a few orchestral excerpts (for the schools that require them.) I`m considering doing the posthorn solo from Mahler`s 3rd, the trumpet soli section from Academic Overture, Pines of Rome 2nd mov. solo, something from Scheherezade, Petrouschka - 1st mov. (opening odd meter section), and a number of others. I`ll need to pick three of varying styles.

Anyway, as for the Tomasi...hah. I could /get through it/, but I would get into a community college, let alone Northwestern.

Thanks for the consideration though - it`s nice to see someone around here who has heard of Henri Tomasi

Cheers!
Aaron
