keep your lips relaxed, let the air support the tone. Most people`s problems on trumpet come from too firm cheeks and lips.

The only thing that I could recommend, is that when you play, keep you lips buzzing at the same speed, like don`t fluctuate the speed at which you lips are buzzing. Also, don`t try to be too intense when you first pick up your trumpet and start playing. Just relax, and take you time. with time and patience, it will come to you.

I have been playing the trumpet for between 2-3 yrs now . Whenever I first started it was really hard for me to produce a long smooth sound but I just kept trying and trying for at least a couple weeks and finaly one day I picked up my trumpet and tried to make one and after a few trys I did it. SO my advice is to just practice and try your hardest and finally one day when you pick up your trumpet you can finally do it. If you get frustruated its okay cuz belive me I got frustrated PLENTY of times!!!

My best advise from teachers that I had PLAY LONG TONES!!! every day!

long tones build up your lips and over time you will make clean long tones believe me.

I also just returned to playing trumpet and a little over a month past and long tones really help me make the tones that I want.

Good Luck
Dave

I do agree with some of the other people. I`m just picking mine back up after four years. I played with Disney world here in orlando. Long tones are the key. just relax. Most of the time as horn players we tend to put pressure on the lips, tring to get a good round sound. If you work in an envioment that will allow you, take your mouthpiece with you to work or when you are driving in the car. Long buzzes on the mouthpiece. It will strengthen you ambishure(spelling)sorry

ok I have quite of few tips for you
First you need to find a good mouthpiece
Have your teacher or find a professsional
player help you out with this
Some great exercises are
Leadpipe Buzzing
Long tones
Pedal Tones
Lip Bends
Mouthpiece Buzzing
Lip Slurs
And just playing everything musically
Also you do really should practice at least
an hour a day
hope this helped

Buy yourself a Salvation Army hymn book and start playing each hymn.....starting with four bar phrases then try eight bar phrases and work up from there...eventually you will find you will be able to play most hymns from beginning to end without breathing.....believe me you will have a great sound.

Who said to relax your lips and muscles? That is completely wrong. Your lips need to be firm throughout the entire range. The tone you are producing comes from the size of the aperture and a contant air stream. Like others said, it is mostly playing as much as you can. I have good and bad days, and you will too, but keep playing.

At about 8:00am, find a lake, or an open space where you know you are not going to bother anybody. Do the long notes chromaticly starting on middle G and down to F sharp and up to G sharp and down, and so on. But, start each note and attack it, pianissimo, a tuner would greatly help, or some tunes where you could incorporate your note to a tuning... go up piano, forte, fortissimo stop, start the same note from fortissimo, and down until you come back to piano there, stop and attack the note again, but from piano to pianissimo, notice the lip opening up for a rounder sound, you will eventually find your sound and go after it until you can dominate each note. Especcially at the upper register, and keep your pedal note all the time. And practice outside where your sound espands and opens up... Good luck

BUZZ... that`s it take your mouthpiece off your trumpet and buzz... when you get good at reaching good range with this start practicing scaled and songs with only your mouthpiece, you`ll have an amazing sound and even more inportantly a beautiful range and wonderful control!
