If you seriously want to be a Pro. Then sorry mate...that`s a full time job, and you need to make a buck to put food on the plate.
Practice can also be by playing gigs, and trying out new things (if the band agrees). The more you play the better you will be, and the quicker you pass most on the sidelines having a rest.
Put in, as you say work, work and work.
What is healthy is to stop to smell the roses, and have a short break when you feel it is too much. But don`t stop, just ease into neutral, then step up a gear after the short break.
