With a new horn (you did not say the make - so unsure of the metal on the valves) you cannot over oil if you use a good quality oil.

The important thing is to clean them regularly by wiping off the valve pistons, and a wipe/clean of the casing. Sometimes small (tiny) particles of metal can be given off, or moved through the horn to the valves. More regular cleaning with a new horn is best. The shiny area may be a wear point against the casing. I would keep giving a regular clean every few days for the first couple of months, and oil before and after playing.

Remove each valve after playing and wipe off, re-oil and put back ready for the next time. As long as it doesn`t stick, and you are cleaning and oiling, then it will wear in nicely. Nothing to worry about if she`s not sticky or sluggish.

Munch,

The silver part is just where the valves are being worn in. Monel (the alloy used to make your type of valve) is dull until polished. The parts of that valve that touch the valve casing most often will slowly get polished to "silver" rather then "grey". It`s a good thing My B flat (Bach Strad) did the same thing. I`ve had the horn for two years and bought it now.

Cheers!
Aaron
