Really difficult by yourself. Get a teacher, even for just a few lessons. Then you can better judge for yourself.

Yes, it`s possible.
I started trumpet in 4th grade, then stopped right after. It was 8th grade when I picked it back up, but I didn`t play in band until 10th grade. I never had a teacher through high school.
I`m in my second year of college now. After not playing at all during my first year, I`ve joined orchestra this year. One of the conditions the conductor had me agree to was to get a private instructor.
I`ve only had one lesson so far, but I`ve discovered that I`ve been playing kinda on the side of my mouth, which isn`t good. To correct it means a sort of embrochure restructuring, which I had been hoping to avoid. But it`s a flaw I`m glad to have found before it could have been a problem (ie it can cause shifted teeth).
So I would recommend you begin with a teacher, so you start correctly. If after learning the basics you feel you can get better on your own, then by all means do that.
