I started playing trumpet in 7th grade and all through middle school i was top trumpet in the top band in the district. But i still had crap for range. After getting into high school i have done trombone, tuba and french horm what ever was needed for the band (our band is quite small and lacks sufficant numbers of certain instuments. Recently i started oboe, and lemme tell ya, that killed all my tone, range, and most of all my mojo! Since the winter break has started i decided i wanted to recapture my mojo, so ive been doing lips slurs and scales for two days now, about 30 minutes three or four times a day, and ive got it all back plus some range.
Id like to emphisize what some others have been saying
1. DONT SHOVE THE TRUMPET INTO YOUR FACE!!!! Use as little pressure as possible, you will have much better endourance and it will sound better.
2. To play high use more air and tighten your lips a bit, mostly air. Breath from your gut, mouthpieces only do so much, AIR is what does all the real work.
3. LIP SLURS!!!!!!! They improve flexibility, range EVERYTHING!!! Use this pattern its a good one Low C, G, C(in staff), G, E(higher one in staff), C (in staff), G (above staff), E(higher on in staff), C(above staff), G(above staff), E(above staff), C(above staff), and just keep going on up as high as you can.
4. Scales, do scales, ooodles of em, star low and then do high ones. Dont jsut stick with simple ones either, do ALL of em, from the easy C, to the taxing F#, it will improve your sight reading ability in addition to range. Do the scales in thirds, with different rythmes, i dont know what you would call it, but you do it like this (in degrees of the scale) 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 1, 6, 1, 7, 1, 8, and then the opposite on the way down
5. ... there was suppose to be something here, but i forgot what it was.. oh well..
Hope that helps some people
