Use your throat, also try rolling your "RRRs" and that has a good effect. Practice and it will come. Don`t overdo the tricks. But you should learn them and use them as you need. Try to use only 1 a night in a solo.

I cannot do it well either, it is something you have to try to learn, a lot of Europeans and South Americans have the advantage with their language, so it is easy for them... I have a friend who sounds great rolling the "RRRs" off the centre of his tongue. He can tongue while rolling as well.
Sorry, we have to learn it. The growl can be done using the back of the throat and back of the tongue.

Rolling R`s is easier. YOu can also practice taking notes really really flat and you will hit something sort-of in the middle of 1 notes that sounds like a growl. That`s harder to do that rolling an R though.

Try it on the horn, and see if any work. Then the confusion may go.

phil, no don`t push any valves, just try it out, jsut slowly take the note really really flat (did I mention slow? and flat? ;-). YOu will reach a point in the note where the horn would naturally start to switch to another note (ie take c really flat and the horn will try to switch to g). If you hold it in the middle of c and g it will growl at you. :-) I use it every once in awhile. It`s neat to move the notes around and make it ugly, then bring it back.
