Is a +-150 dolar trumpet enough, to learn and then to play some things?

I learnt on a AUD$30 (USD15.), and it lasted a few months, and was good enough to get me going. My next was a great horn I still have now; and I have a few others.

Man you can play a garden hose with a funnel on the end to get you started. Get a good teacher, and just get blowing and enjoy yourself. You can worry about the hardware later, as you get better. All the best for 2005. Get swingin`

Three things:
1. Valves all work (go up and down OK.
2. Slides work.
3. It has a mouthpiece and a case.

Don`t worry too much about how it looks.

My very first trumpet was a $150 bundy. I had to squeeze the leadpipe to keep it from buzzing (there was a broken solder). When it wasn`t rattling it was a really good horn. I even used that horn to play the solos when I was 1st chair in high school symphonic. So yes. YOu will sound like complete crap while you`re still learning so the horn doesn`t really matter at first. Save your dough. Practice enough, in the right ways, and it won`t take you long to outgrow it.

theres still another problem, i`m thinking on a ebay auction to buy it, is there a possible way to know if it`s a reasonable trumpet to it`s price? thanks

But in reality, if you`ve never played before, it won`t make much difference as far as sound goes on a crappy horn. What would matter are the valves. Do they stick? it`s tough to learn how to play if every time you push a valve down they take a couple seconds to come back up. Tuning slides work? YOu can`t play with others if you`re a full quarter step out of tune. Things like that.

eBay is ok if you know what you are looking for, don`t buy the first one you see and DO NOT buy one made by Bessons, they are cheap and do not work. When you find one check the internet to find out about it and ask around if it`s good and the price is right then go for it if not then leave it alone and keep looking. There are cheap instruments out there that play really well and when you are more experienced then it`s time to splash out on a decent one. Till then practice, practice, practice and enjoy.

I`m going to echo what others who have already replied offer you about buying a horn off eBay.

One more thing you might want to consider is checking with your local music store about an instrument rental. Some even offer "rent to buy" programs where you start out paying monthly rent on the instrument, and then if you decide you want to "own" it, some if not all of the rent you have paid may be applied to the purchase price.

Although this particular buyer may not be able to buy using Ebay, there are many honest people using Ebay and I happen to be one of them. If you were to bid on my trumpet and wanted to make a cash transaction in person it would be OK with me, it is just that there aren`t many people where I live.

There are signs to watch for when using any form of purchasing without being face to face. Watch out for people who are elusive, who won`t give serial numbers, have ads which look like copies of other ads or people who don`t seem to know anything about what they`re selling (especially instruments).

It pays to be smart when bidding, but not scared. Using PayPal, Bidpay or a similar service is always a good idea.

I reccomend getting an old Olds Ambassador or King 600 off of eBay. Both are great student horns and both often sell for less than $100. Don`t worry about what it looks like. As long as the valves work and there are no giant dents or holes, it should be a good enough horn for a beginner.

The question is whether it is a $150 dollar used trumpet that may have cost three times as much new or if it is indeed a brand new $150 dollar trumpet right from the dealer.

I learned on a $15 trumpet from a pawn shop with no case and a mouthpiece permanently frozen into it. I managed with that trumpet to go from knowing nothing about the trumpet or music to winning first chair in my middle school band in less than three months.

By starting out on a cheaper trumpet you might have a little more challenge on some things but if you overcome those challenges and then later on buy a semi-pro or pro model you will really appreciate that improvement soo much more
