I`m am only allowed to play on 3c or larger.... but I need to get high as I am a lead. Can any of you help me figure out what mouthpiece I can play on and still get excellent range on??? Well I have 4 mouthpeices a regular 7C a 3C and 3F and a 14a3c .. I like them all i use them for diffrent styles not ranges. I tend to use the shallower ( 3C 3F) For Jazz thats my preferance. they tend to be sharp becuase of tha shallow mouthpeice. Nothing will improve your range but practice. You could go and get a new one depending on preferance. I Like shallower peices becuase of the braces. Don`t let anyone talk you into getting a new mouthpeice becase they say it will make you play higher it wont. its all preferance on your part. If you want go to your store and ask to try a few diffrent mouthpeices varing In Width/depth.. see what you like best. Hope that helps.

3C and 7C are the same depth, but the rim width is different. The 3C has a larger diameter of the cup. If you want a mouthpiece to help you play higher, you need to get a smaller volume cup. That can be done with a smaller rim size, such as playing a 7 instead of a 3, or more commonly with a shallower cup. The C cup is the standard depth, and in the Bach system, the higher the letter, the shallower the cup. So if you currently play a 3C and want to get a lead mpc with the same rim size, you should try a 3D, 3E, or 3F. Yamaha doesn`t make a 3C, so if you actually have a Yamaha, then the numbering system that they use is the rim size(number), cup depth(letter), rim shape(number), and backbore(letter). The higher the first number, the bigger diameter. The lower the first letter, the shallower the cup. The next is just a rim shape corresponding to a number, with 4 being the most common. The final letter is the backbore, with a being the most restricted and e or f being the most open. My advice is to play the biggest mouthpiece you can, as it will give the most and best sound and response.

Whatever mouthpiece you use, it all comes down to your technique. I play trumpet with a shallow mouthpiece, cornet with a very deep mouthpiece for the mellow tone effect it gives. On both my top note is top E/struggling to top F so I don`t think the depth has much effect. Rather than spend loads of money on different `pieces you could do worse than to invest in two books : "How brass players do it" and Charles Collins Advanced lip flexibility. Both will help if you add them into your daily practise routine.

Do lip slurs and play lots of scales as a warm up.
Pick some scales that are new to you.
