Question about mouthpieces, etc.    21:27 on Saturday, January 22, 2005

Ok, I`m the new section leader of our trumpet section. I`ve been playing on a silver Bundy and a 5C mouthpiece. My trumpet is vintage and I don`t want to risk it getting a ding. I was curious to hear any opinions on what type of trumpet I should purchase. I really don`t want a Bach, unless anyone knows of a really good one. Don`t worry about cost, just tell me what`s the best. Should I switch to a Bach 3C? The leaders before me all played a 3C. Any information would be appreciated!

Hey bud. Dont change to a 3C unless you buy a MEGAtone 3c, buy a Bach 7c, if it is a stage/jazz band. About the trumpet - You said dont worry about the price so hear goes - Harrelson 927 GOLD Callet Jazz Trumpet Bach - Valued at just under $9000.00 US Dollars. Good luck - Keep in contact.

The 5C mouthpiece is a decent size for most amateur players. If you want a good horn, the Harrelson is a good horn, but the best are Monettes. If you just want a conventional horn, I reccomend the new Yamaha Xeno. A much better horn than the Bach, and the quality and consistency are top notch. As for Megatone mouthpieces, they do very little if the instrument is not heavy enough for them to help, and most conventional equipment is not. The old Bundy is probably not worth much, regardless of the condition. It is only a bottom level student instrument and will probably never be a collectors item.

I have a B&S Challenger 2 which was 1/2 the price of a Bach Strad but plays just as well. I use it for lead trumpet in concert bands and in my own trad/dance band. No complaints; I also use a Monette B5L mouthpiece because I like them and the mouthpiece is as important than the intrument; a decent `piece will make virtually any trumpet play better but this doesn`t equally apply the other way round.

3c is good, but overrated I think. Just experiement.

As for the horn, just go pick up another used Bundy. I marched with a bundy.

Thanks for all the responses. Well, my Bundy wasn`t bought used and it`s not a student model. I just wanted a newer trumpet. How much does one of those mouthpieces you were talking about cost? Also, what is the big difference between it and a Bach 3C? My friend plays a Bach OMEGA. Any good? I was looking at a B&S Challenger II. Is it better than Bach? Is Bach really the best to purchase?

guys before anyone gets anymore ideas please take a second and listen as a professional trumpeter i have seen many people destroy a good working player either pro or ammature by making too many changes.if something is working for you expand on that you need at least a year or so on any given mouthpiece to learn hor to play it well if you change to often you become frustrated and all the hard work goes down the tubes, i have been playing on the same brand mouthpiece for 27yrs i am now considering a change to a monette and believe me i am affraid to make the change because this works but remember most of you guys have been playing less time and need to concentrate on solid and constant practice techniques rather than what type of horn or mouthpiece you will know when it is time to change. please feel free to e mail me i can help you guys make an educated choice based on what type of music and sound you are looking for.. pat gallo

Pat I have been playing 50 years.I SWITCHED TO MONETTE FOUR YEARS AGO. definitely try the monette. I tried the 2,3,4,5, sizes. the b4s and the b4ld are the best for me. I would recommend starting there. I also use a flg 4 for my flugal. I`m playing the best horn of my life. I also have two harrelson conversion horns. The harrelson conversion on your horn will turn it into a monette without paying the price of a monette horn. I will be selling my monette collection if you are interested in trying any of them, i have monette trumpet and flugal mouthpieces for sale. thanks john,

I play a 2 valve DEG bugle..........alot of the time in a somewhat high register., only play during the summer months with an american legion senior corps........I`ve been using a megatone 7c, but like my 1E (shallow cup) but bore is too small to get more air through.what would you suggest I use.also have a jettone al hirtB...but like the added sound of a megatone. Thanks MIKE

the diffrence between 7c and 5c is the diameter of the rim and the 5 is a bit deeper but other wise very similar 7 is used as a base mouthpiece in that i mean a beginner as you progress you should go a bit larger and develop your ombucher.
