next time u see this ashley check out this clip. Its maynard doing lip trills. It kinda sounds like vibrato except the difference is its jumping really fast between thirds or the next note in the bugle series i really cant remember. however its really cool.

Ah lip trilling... It`s about time someone asked about this. If you know what a normal trill is then you can figure out what a lip trill is... basically a trill done with the lips, but technically it`s just fast lip slurs (moving back and forth between harmonics like from 3rd space C to 4th space E). Lip trills are especially common in jazz big band music and many say that it originated from Louis Armstrong`s vibrato. It got so wide that he was trilling between the harmonics of the trumpet. It`s usually notated as a horizintal squiggly line or zig-zag on top of a note.

Anyway, to get started in mastering this technique, I suggest using a metronome. Since it is essentially fast lip slurs, it must first be practiced as lip slurs. Put the metronome on 60 bpm and hold down the fingering 1 and 3 to slur back and forth from 2nd line G to the 3rd line B. You can start with quarter notes but the main idea is not to tongue the notes. Try to change notes at the instant the metronome beats. Do this in front of the mirror and try to move your face as little as possible when changing notes.

CONTROL the lip slur first and eventually go higher in range and increase the speed of the metronome. Be VERY patient because this is one of the most challenging trumpet techniques. The trick to a good lip trill is a controlled lip slur.

Good luck. Feel free to ask me more trumpet questions.

Hi, once you`ve mastered playing the fast slures in the lower register it gets easier when you go up the octave...try whistling a trill...do you notice your tongue moving up and down in your mouth..thats all a trill is in the upper register...you need lots of air when you are starting to learn the technique....all you are doing is changing the air speed. andy

check out my secret to high notes/flexibility/endurance and the book that i mention will go through the long (but rewarding) process of teaching you how to lip trill with ease and sound good doing it. but don`t go straight to lip trilling without first working your flexibility slowly and gradually speeding up

IT`S NOT THAT HARD!!!!!!!! it`s all in the tounge and air speed
try stratin on a concert F (middle g) the raise your tounge a little bit as if your sluring and blow faster air.
this will bring u to a middle C the lower the tounge adn make the air a little less intense. practice this and soon you`ll be able to lip trill
