I believe it has to do with what metals are used, techniques used to change tamber and tone, and whos name is stamped on it. I believe the way they make instruments is to build it out of a raw brass and then dip it into whatever finish is desired. Student models are usually raw brass and dipped in laquer and intermediate to pro will contain better brass that produces a different timbre like rose brass then dipped in silver or gold. Alot of ideas have been invented to modify the timbre of the instrument like double bells, braces that connect to the flare of the bell to slot notes, reverse leadpipe, Weighted valve system, etc. These will up the price of the horn. Usually its up to the manufacturer how they will determine things like price and quality. Some deciding facters would be if the horn is hand made or by machine. I think they also add a little more to the price if it has someones name on it like Bobby Shew or Doc Severinsen. However, when considering a horn alot of what they use to affect the horns ablility to change the sound should be factored into the price. When shopping around look at the bore size, if it is round or square tuning crook, reverse leadpipe. Usually pro is better than student but intermediates are not that bad. Im on an intermediate horn that im borrowing and i sound so much better on it then on the pro horn i baught. This is as much as i figured out im sure others will have more in depth and contradicting info, but yea this is most of my expieriences with different horns.

It`s just tu pull the money out of your pocket. Look for a horn that provides you with good sound, pitch and response. That`s the only important things.
