Dave,

It`s not hard to make a trumpet sound bad either. Like all instruments, it takes years of practice to master the trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, or whatever you choose to play. What is hard to do is to make an instrument sound beautiful, and I don`t think there is a single instrument that can`t sound good in experienced hands (except maybe the bagpipes, but whatever).

i agree with thomas bagpipes are really cool and you have to really know how to play it to make it sound beautiful but if you would do both trumpet and clari chatroom and see but i stand at my decision and say Bb trumpet make sure you dont get a Cb lol! and fo a begginer book i say essential elements 200 book 1 and foundation to superior performance also called the blue book well if anyboy has anything to say about my oppinions shoot and i might learn something lol ttyl!

clarinet pwn and you know it... but it depends on your personality. if you feel like leading the band, take the trumpet.

i play clarinet, but i lead anyways b/c i sight read better than the trumpets. =) and of course i play the bassoon as well, which is an amazing instrumnt.

ahhhh... you said it again! If you want more oppurtunities to play then the trumpet is definitely what you want to go with. the c@#$%^&* isn`t used as much in jazz as it used to be and it would be difficult to find many bands other than your school band or church or community that will let you play

actually for a beginner book i would recomend the beginner rubank book or the red standard of excellence book. that`s what i started on and now i`m playing professionally and 15 and i made all state band. than i think once you`ve mastered those books you go to arbans. once again what i did
