just relax your lips completely and blow air so that your lips fly all over the place and then do it on your trumpet with a little more focus

Lips all over the place? I don`t know about that one... As far as I know, there are two ways to do a growl:
(1) (the way I do it) using the tongue. Can you say "Rrrrroll up the rrrrrim?" As you play a tone, incorporate that "rrrrr" of the tongue. This is also called flutter tonguing.
(2) The other way is with the throat. Can you growl like a dog? Well, this time while you hold a tone, make a dog growl sound using your throat in the same time. Hence the "growl."
Both these techniques will give you pretty much the same effect: a very rough and dirty sound. If you want an even dirtier sound, try growling with a plunger, but use a clean plunger!!
- Good luck
