I certainly feel bad for you music girl. Clarinet? Uh, it seems as if your music director is making some poor choices. I am however cursed with way too many flutes and clarinets, and not nearly enough lower instruments. I am wondering what will happen to the oboe sectio after it's only player, a senior, graduates soon.

Our band too. All we have for low instruments are a bass clarinet who graduated and two bari saxes that aren't the best at it.

We have a reasonably good selection. Our band teacher begs like crazy for people to switch from flute to other instruments, so we now have:
1 bassoon (me!)
1 bari sax (who's awesome at sax....but horribly loud)
1 bass clarinet
3 oboes
5 clarinets
17 flutes (ugggg, most of them are sucky)
4 saxophones
6 trumpets
1 tuba (she tries...but its just not her thing)
5 trombones
2 tenor saxophones
Cool huh? Oh, and our high school has one of the biggest marching bands. We will have around 250 people enrolled next year.
We once had a bassoon/oboe piece in our band. It was fun, and was essentially a solo for a bassoon and oboe, but my part (the most important part) got completely covered up by flute (the bad ones just blow random notes....it sounds horrible) and the super annoying bari sax. Since then she has only tried one other piece with a bassoon solo/feature/fun part. That piece was sorcerer's aprentice!!! The stupid trumpets didn't like not having the melody though, so they purposely messed the entire piece up (loudly) which caused our band director to decide not to play the piece.
I have a strong dislike for our trumpet section now...

DHS marching band used to have about 300...but this year we'll be lucky to get 200.

We don't even have a marching band anymore because every one was complaining about how much they hated it and our director got annoyed. I liked it though, I wish we still had it.

my band is huge. no doubt about it.

at our junior high there are three bands that all are pretty big.

In beginning band, I think we might have had around 50 clarinets... We call it our army:D then maybe about 10 mmoved to sax, and ten others quit.

We have a ton of trombones... maybe like... 20? maybe thats more... i dont really now, because the concert band has to be in two different periods its so big. (woodwinds and brass)
heck, we have a ton of every instrument.

I am really excited for next year because for symphonic band our director only takes a certain amount of each instrument

And omigoodness. This year there are 5 beginning oboes. 5!!!!

lol I think I am the 1st oboe player to start at our school in the last 40 years. I haven't really heard of any others except for one person who switched from flute I think but didn't like it so she switched back. No one even knew what an oboe was lol. I can't even count the number of times someone came up to me and said "Whoa, what's wrong with your clarinet?" lol. But there was a 5th grader who started on it this year finally!

5 oboes? wow. once I went to an honor band and there were 3 including me and that was kind of pushing it...

ya... you can definetly hear the oboes in the beginning band, but they have gotten pretty good at blending/tuning/being quiet even when the music say fff.:D

we have 5 oboes in our beginning band, 3 in concert (my band) and 2 in symphonic this year.

lol. 2 oboes is pushing it:D

I really wish we had another oboe in my band! It would be really fun to play duets for contest!

I'm SOOO happy! It's almost summer! Tomorrows our last day of school. But I don't think it counts cuz u just go to first period, then the end of year assembly, get yearbooks, sign yearbooks and go home.

tuesday night we were supposed to have our band swim party, but it got lightning and rained out. so we had it wednesday night! SO FUN!
