Hey, what do people think is the hardest instrument to play? I`ve been playing the electric guitar for 3 years now and have just begun to play classical guitar and wonder how it compares to other instruments, specifically the piano and violin, as I would like to play these instruments as well.
I always thought the violin seemed the hardest to play, but some people I`ve talked to think it is the classical guitar. Anyone play both well??!

hmm.. i`ve heard that french horn is the most difficult to actually play well. b/c you need a lot of puff and all the open notes are really close to each other... in addition, the french horn embouchure is pretty hard.

Bari you`ve gone one better!
I was only thinking of a normal Tuba - I didn`t know there was one you had to march around with round your neck. Sure wouldn`t want to play susaphone for the Grand Old Duke of York`s marching band!

I can play the violin and the piano. The violin is dead easy to get the hang of but then you get higher and things start getting complicated. And if you don`t practice you tend to squeak.
The piano is harder to get the hang of because you have to read two lines of music at once, but it is a really practical instrument to learn to play because it`s so versatile and it suits any type of music.
Have fun

Out of all the instruments I`ve ever played, the hardest one i`ve found is the Armenian Duduk. It`s a small, unassuming looking reed instrument but the sheer amount of air you need to put through it and maintain whilst circular breathing is ridiculous! I play the tenor sax as well and every time I return to it after trying to play the duduk all i can get is a squeek because I`ve got used to blowin so hard. At least its not as heavy as a tuba though.

^ehh no... the flute is medium hard to begin on... then gets harder, but it definitely isn`t the flute. it`s like one of those medium hard instruments...
clarinet- super easy to start, and like all instruments it gets harder (a lot harder) but overall the clarinet isn`t THE hardest to play
oboe- extremely hard to start on, it`s a hard instrument.. possibly THE hardest... requires a heck of a lot of breath. and you need to focus all that air into a tiny hole.. it gives ppl headaches.. haha... just like the damn flute. palyers always start out sound super bad... and that`s b/c it takes a lot of time to get the sound that the oboe is really supposed to make.
bassoon- easy to start on, kinda heavy (not as heavy as a damn tuba) but with all the keys and the fact that it`s the only mainstream instruemtn besides the piano to use all ten fingers to play, it makes the basson very hard. as well as the fact that a bassoon has at least 9 thumb keys. (most instruments have around 2)
french horn- extremely hard to start on, all the open notes are very close to each other. requires a lot of breath (more than the tuba i believe, b/c of the amount of pressure) and basically the instrument is SO HARD that even the french horns in the orchestra must specialize in either the top range or the bottom range, because learning and mastering both is too hard.
trombone- not necessarily hard. the instrument uses a slide instead of exact fingerings, so it might be har to get all the positions perfect every time you play. requires a lot of skill, definitely, but hard? no.
tuba- it`s a friggin heavy instrument, what can i say? it doesn`t require the MOST breath, but it does require quite a lot of breath... fingerings, well, they`re just as hard as any other brass instruemnt. not THE hardest, but no doubt hard.
trumpet- like all brass instuments, it`s hard to get a first sound. after that, the only thing that makes the trumpet hard is showing people the trumpets full potential... it`s such an agile instrument... only downfalls might be for a beginner to get all the notes right, and how hard to blow...
sax- bleh. just like the clarinet. lol.
all strings- not hard. might take a few weeks to get a beginner to bow properly, but it doesn`t require blowing. jsut quick hands. nothing THAT hard about string instruments.
percussion- well. it really is easy. possibly THE easiest in beginner band. but once you get to the quicker drum pieces (like in drm line =D) it gets super hard.
i`d rank them like this:
1 french horn
2 oboe
3 bassoon
4 tuba
5 trumpet
6 flute
7 percussion
the rest, pretty much easyyy

i don`t think the question should be the hardest to play, but the hardest to master. the majority of instruments are easy to play (like piano). but then mastering it is a different story (like piano). guitar is a good example, you can play it easy enough, but then mastering it is very difficult; that is, knowing every fret, every chord, and then retuning the strings and start form scratch again, very hard to master. for those of you who don`t play tuba, and therefore think it is very difficult to learn and play, it`s not. tuba is very simple. don`t let the size and the breathing requirements fool you. what it is, is basically a big trumpet. tubas rule!!

totally the triangle.
j/k. i`d have to agree with ric, all instruments are fairly easy to play, but mastering them is a different matter. and excuse me jay, but for your information string instruments are not easy to play, have you ever tried playing a kabalevsky concerto or vivaldi on the violin? trust me, it`s NOT easy. and if it looks easy it`s because of years of practise. maybe i`m biased because i play violin, but i would have to say the violin is the hardest instrument to master, and even if you don`t agree with that, it is definitely NOT easy as you seem to think.

I play the violin, piano and flute and i`d have to say that the hardest is the violin, then the piano and then the flute. (The flute is kinda medium hard like someone else already said)
