Judging by the diversety of the answers, I must say that it apears that how hard an instrument is for any particular person seems to depend entirely on the person. Some people find certain instruments extremely hard which others find simple.

How hard an instrument is

I think how hard an instrument is depends on what the person can do and is good at. I can`t whistle but my brother can(confound him). He can play the trumpet; I can`t. I can play the piano; he can`t. The question I have is "If I can play the piano, then why can`t I play the drums???" Ah well... c`est la vie

I used to not be able to whistle at all! BUT, when I started playing the clarinet, and my embouchure got stronger, I started to whistle easily, and especially after playing the flute, you get an even tighter embouchure, and then the piccolo, made my embouchure very tight. lol

flute and piano

i myself play the flute and (a little) piano, and i think the flute is more difficult. piano is difficult because you have to play two lines at once.
flute however is difficult to master because you have to pay attention to a lot of things : your breathing, intonation (flute players, i shouldn`t complete the list right, you know it)
if you start learning the piano, you can play tunes from the beginning, but with the flute you first have to learn how to hold the damn thing, how to blow, and to get your notes right (and they don`t sound to well in the beginning). you`re really frustrated at first, but once you master it, man what a bliss...
so : flute is more difficult
so : flute is more difficult that piano

Bagpipes
it is the only instrument you are not
trained on initially to learn how to play. you have to be taught by using the practice chanter for over 1 year
most people 2 years before you even
pick up a set of pipes then you have
another year learning how to keep a constant tone , tuning etc
then you learn the music all over again.
you have to tune several drones
your ez drone your reed and your chanter
then you have to blow a ton of air
into the bag while pressing the air
out of the bag and fingering the notes.
it is the hardest most difficult
my demanding mentally and physically,
instrument to play.
i can pick up any instrument and get a tone out of it you cant pick up the pipes and get a tone out of it.
trust me i have played the guitar
trumpet baritone sousaphone tuba
piano now i play the pipes
and get much more enjoyment out of that because im a rare breed.
piano players are a dime a dozen
how many pipers do you know....

...but the one thing not possible with bagpipes is to play them on the beach.
Anywhere else works OK, but the beach is a disaster.
It`s OK while you are playing, but as soon as you stop, and put them down on a rock an octypus will crawl up out of the sea and try to have sex with them.

Well, the person who blabbered away about bagpipes, I`ve noticed that you don`t play any woodwind instruments, and the french horn which are in the subject of the "harder" instruments. I personally think this thread has no end...

violin vs. piano

i think that the violin is the hardest.ive had some experience on the piano and you can never get a note out of tune...unless you hit a not completley wrong note. but on the other hand violin you have to hit the write note and get your fingers on the fingerboard before your other hand moves the bow.but other than than that ya its pretty easy.

Have you tried anything other than violin and piano? How about wind instruments where you need to press buttons and move slides while blowing with a embouchure? You see, this is very pointless, where most of you only play like 2 instruments and say ones harder than your other one.

The hardest instrument to play is the one you don`t practice, I can play trumpet, violin, guitar and piano and organ and found them all hard to start with but after practive lots it gets easy
