I have a Conn-88HY-CL, the F-attachment on needs to be oiled up. My brother is a french horn player, he let me use some oil from bach, will that hurt the horn since the oil was made for french horn rotors? Also, which type of rotor oil would otehrs recommend?

it wont hurt because rotor oil is what you shuold be using anyway. i suggest using hetmann oils. they are probably one of the best oils.

You`ll be fine. like said before, you should be using rotary oil anyways. Don`t use slide oil though. That is thinner than rotary oil. Another good thing to use is axel grease on your tuning slides, it`s works great and much cheaper. Go to the car mechanics shop and get a whole canaster of it. Good for band directors to have stocked for their students as well for those emergency, 10 min. before concert times.

axel grease?! what is wrong with people. why is it such a financial burden for people to buy TUNING SLIDE GREASE. Seriously they make it for a reason. Its not that expensive and it lasts a long time. i know im not a repair tech and dont claim to know everything about trombones but seriously we play EXPENSIVE instruments why are you looking to save a dollar or two on greases. seriously how much did you pay for your trombone? how much for the mouthpiece? how much for the case? now tuning slide grease make cost 1.50. what percent is 1.50 of the total amount spent on your horn? yea, so stop this madness.
end rant

eww....axel greese, heck no....i would never put axel greese on my horn or anywhere around it, a $2000, like a $80 case and a $80 dollar mouthpiece (all is included in the price of $2000) and if something happened to it then i may be more than that to get it fixed, so axel greese is a dumb idea, plus not to be mean...but i didn`t ask about tuning slide greese, f attachment oil...sorry and please dont take that personal or offensive.

Axle grease is generally made with lithium or molybdenum. These are not things that you want in your trombone. Buy the stuff that was meant for your trombone. As for oil, the rotor oil should only be used on the spindle. Thinner valve oil should be squirted down the tube into the actual valve casing. Thick oil in here will slow the valve down too much. And axle grease... are there really people that dumb?

work in a instrument repair shop, you would be surprised what people think will work on their horns to make it "work better"

for the thinner oil, what would i use, what brand or whatever, because all i use right now is UMI (i think thats it)stuff and my brother plays the french horn, i would think he knows, but possibly the rotor on my horn and whats on his french horn are two different things (like the design, because my F rotor is a huge rotor, like one of the biggest)but i dont think size would matter. But he uses this stuff made by Bach, i put it on and it started to stick, so i waited for a little while, i put too much in i think, and so after awhile it started workign good, so would this be best?

as long as your valve is working than it shouldnt be a problem.
recently ive started to use the Charles Davis brand valve oil(mainly because he one of my teachers) and this stuff is great. its thin and it lasts fora while.
