I recently rented a trombone, for it my dream to play in a ska band. I intended to teach myself to play it, but it is proving to be quite a challenge. The biggest problem im having right now is getting a constand buzz going. Im not even 100% sure what a good buzz sounds like. Any tips on fixing this or any other problems you think a beginner like myself could have. Thanks in advance.

It`s hard to say over the net, my advice is to get a private teacher. That is your best bet, hands down.

A ska band is a type of music that orginated in jamaica around the 60`s and 70`s, and is somewhat similar to reggae. Nowadays it has developed into a punk rock type sound that features a fast tempo, heavily accented off beat guitar and more often than not a Brass section usually consisting of trombones, trumpets and saxophones. A good number of ska bands are mentioned in this thread, http://www.8notes.com/f/30_106955.asp.

As a self-taught trombonist (and still learning :P) the best advice for a constant buzz is to relax and let the air out of your lungs evenly (ie don`t give it one quick, sharp buzz). At the same time, though, don`t relax so much that hardly any air comes out , or your sound will not have a lot of depth or warmth to it. Oh, and don`t puff your cheeks!

Go get a private teacher.

nobody on here can tell you how to play trombone. Even when you read books on playing trombone you can just learn by reading you need to supplement that with a teacher of some sorts.

good luck and i want to add, it is just strange that you are picking up the bone to play ska.... like wow thats weird. well whatever. one love
