But you dont get it. There is more to any instrument then "how it works"

you can learn all you want about how it works. but how to make the proper sound for YOUR physiology is not something your gonig to find in a book. learning how to work the horn properly is not easy, much less easy to do it alone.

Also heres a tip, trombone positions are relative. meaning 4th position is not in the same place for every single note. You have to learn that each note on the horn in different partials, octaves, or false partials are in different places. So every single partial even when playing the same position may need adjusting. these are things I believe to be imparative for people learning trombone to learn. pitch is what kills A LOT of trombone players and i believe this is one of the major points to getting closer to playing in tune.

and im going to stand by my statement to get a teacher. in the long run learning from someone who knows how the beast of a trombone works is extremely important. bad habits are started early and VERY hard to break when you are older. trust me, i wish i had someone telling me to get a teacher when i started playing. this is something that everyone who is serious about music should do.

Thank you Mas. You can`t just ask questions like that over the net and expect to get a useful answer. I could write for days about what note is in what possition, how clefs work, yadda yadda yadda. But everything I would say would be irrelevant because these things are different for every person. If you are really adament about not getting a teacher, which is fine for young players without much money, you should really get a couple of technical studies books, and make sure you are playing with other trombone players, preferably some that are better than you are.

And another useful tip, LISTEN. Not just while you are playing to the players around you for intonation, style, blend and balance, but to professional players. Buy CDs and go hear them play live. You will get a sense of what it sounds like and what it is like to play this instrument.

Remember, the trombone is one of, if not the, hardest instruments to master, so be patient and except help whenever you can.

And don`t forget to have fun!
