Okay, okay, okay...i know this topic, or something very similar has been posted like, five million times, but i would really appreciate any useful input...i`m getting a new trombone, definitely one with a trigger...i don`t have a prefered model, but i want to know some things to look out for when i do go looking for a new horn, and maybe some good questions to ask...just anything that needs to be taken into consideration before i commit and actually pay for anything...

play before you pay.
make sure the horn you pick works for you.
a good starting point would be the Bach 42 or a Conn 88h
try horns of that type and you may find what you like. also when you find the horn that you like, try as many different horns of the same make/model as it so you can find the right horn of the same type. because most of these horns are made by machine there are very little inconsitencies between the horns its important that you find the right horn. and trying as many as you can is pretty important.
id apply the same method to mouthpieces. at least thats how i do it.

Just a quickie. If it has no brand name or says "Made in China", run the other direction.
Bach, Conn, Getzen, King, Yamaha, and Holton all make good horns that you can usually find around for not terribly expensive.
Also remember, like Mas said, always play it before you buy it. Play it a bunch. Play loud in all registers, soft in all registers, lipslurs, several different articulations, long tones, and bring some piece of music you know pretty well to compare. And do that, compare different horns side to side and make a list of what you like, and what you don`t like, about each one.
It might not be that big of a purchase right now, but it is something that quite possibly will be with you for the rest of your life, so be patient and only go for something you REALLY like.

my recommendation, take a etude or a concerto you have worked on. its a good gauge because it forces you to be musical and not technical so you know what your really getting.
