I am interested in getting a new mouthpiece in a few weeks, and was wondering if anyone has heard anything or had any experience with the Bach Megatone mouthpieces. Im leaning towards a 5g or something very similar. Also, i dont think it does, but gold plating might be an option. SInce it could be my birthda present, might as well get the best mouthpiece for the money. Its either a bach megatone, bach regular, or a schilke mouthpiece. Also, i dunno if the conn 5g which i have is the same as the bach 5g, but my conn mouthpiece gives me too much resistance. I can barely squeeze out the high Bb on it when i can do it easy as pie with my 12c mouthpiece. Is there a mouthpiece, large shank, that has a more open back bore/ throat. Not sure which one means what, but i am very unahppy with my moutpice at the moment, and that has got to change.

Mouthpieces are picky things. One persons favorite could be anothers worst nightmare. Here`s some advice for anyone looking for a new mouthpiece. Research the hell out of it. And, when you are done researching and have narrowed it down to 5 or 10, go play them all. Play them a lot, as much as you can. Music shops are more then willing to let you do this. Pick one you love.

As for the megatone question... I am one of those induviduals who hates them. I thin they are stuffy, overpriced, and over engineered. But that`s just my opinion. Currently I play on a Warburton 5G, which is slightly larger and deeper than a Bach 5G, and a little more open.

Also, make sure that you aren`t depending on a certain mouthpiece to play certain notes. When you get that new mouthiece, work on it a lot, and your range will come. Then you can take that dreaded 12C and throw it away. Or collect a few of them and make a wind chime.

i love my 12c for jazz playing on my straight tenor. sounds beautiful but im buying a new one because the end is dented in. i am maybe considereing a 13c just because i love a really bright sound for jazz. where did you get your warburton mouthpiece? I think my brook mays music store only carries bachs and maybe like one other brand and then the Lindberg Mouthpieces. I was leaning towards one of them, but i`ve heard they are better for solo work? Is that true? I do play some solos, but just mainly improv at home, which i use my jazz trombone for so i guess that wouldbt be an ideal mouthpiece. once again, i will probably be forced to go to my music store and see.

I got my Warburton at Hornacopia in San Carlos, south of San Fransisco. I`m more of a classical player, though, I`m not sure I would use it for jazz. For my little jazz horn I use a Dennis Wick 6. Love it.

Well, mouthpieces really are picky things. You really need to test a few to find one you like. But for starters, what mouthpiece do you play on now? Big bore, aye? The standards would be something like a Bach 5 or 6 1/2. My Warburton 5 is more like a Bach 4, or even slightly larger. I like my piece on the big size though, it works with my classical playing.

Yes, it would. Warburton has a pretty large line of large and small bore, but they are hard to find. My suggestion is just to play as many as you can and pick one YOU like, not what others tell you.

i`ve looked but i can`t find one that would fit a .547 bore trombone. I think im just don`t know alot about mouthpiece sizes. Can someone tell me mouthpiece could fit a .547 bore trombone? I would like a popular type mouthpiece. I would try it out but like I said eariler, there isn`t a music store around here anymore.

There are really only two sizes of trombone mouthpieces, outside of European shank (which you don`t have to worry too much about). Small bore, (jazz horn, small bore horn) and large bore, (large bore trombone and bass trombone). You are looking for a large bore mouthpiece for your .547 bore horn. Some places call them "bass trombone shank". All they are is large shank.

They are a smaller company, so they might be harder to find. Where do you live?

Here is the address: They have a dealer locator on there, check it out.
