Hi,

I`m 20, and would like to learn to play the trombone. Right now I play guitar and keyboards, but I don`t have any real music knowledge. I can`t read music, and my theory is lacking. Basically, I`m your stereotype guitar player. I would like to start from scratch and really learn the instrument.

My question is, how do I go about starting? Trombone teachers don`t seem to be as numerous as guitar teachers and stuff, so I`m not to sure how to go about getting lessons. Also, I`d appreciate any suggestions on a good, affordable trombone for a beginner.

Thanks very much!

What area do you live in?

Trombone teachers are a bit hard to find, but they are out there. Go to your local music store (not your guitar store, guitar center won`t know anything about trombone teachers, but to any store that deals with band instruments) and ask them about trombone teachers. Even if they don`t have one on site they should be able to tell you where and how to find one.

As for buying one, take a look on ebay, or look at things like pawn shops and used music stores. Sometimes you can find good stuff at a good price. A bit of advice, though, stay away from ANYTHING made in China. They won`t work, and you will give up because it`s too frustrating. Also, when you go to the music store to ask about a teacher, you might want to ask about renting an instrument, for a while at least, while you get used to the instrument and figure out what you want and learn more about what you need and what is good and not good.

Thanks for the response! I live in Palm Springs, CA. There`s only one music store in this area, and it`s hit or miss. I`ll check them out though because they do have a small section for band instruments.

What types of thigns should I look for in buying a trombone?

If the music store is no help, you might want to try a local school. A college if there is one, or a high school with a band program. Most high school music teachers will know players in the area, or at least know how to find them.

You might want to try to find a second hand trombone before buying a brand new one.
