Hi, I play trumpet and am now just starting to learn trombone. I got it off ebay and is brand new and is a Selman Tenor trombone. I can`t find this anywhere on the internet except on ebay so I have no Idea of it`s quality but it fit my budget. I`m wondering if any of you have had experience with this brand. Also, it came with a 12c mouthpiece and I really want to get into jazz playing but don`t know if I should just learn on the 12c or perhaps start right off with something that is more akin to jazz music (definetly a big difference from my trumpet mouthpice that`s for sure). I`ve thought of just getting another mouthpiece for variety but I have no idea if my instrument is a small shank or large shank...I`ve tried emailing the ebay seller but nothing back yet. Any suggestions thanks.

if you instrument shipped with a 12C, it`s a small shank. if you intend to use it primarily for jazz, you`re actually on the right track with a 12C especially if you intend to keep up trumpet at the same time.
trying to switch around mpc sizes for variety can be hard on the chops. i`d stay with what you have for a while.

It looks like an off brand, probably made in China, usually a bad copy of major Amercian or European brands. Not bad to start with, though. If you are just starting on trombone, stick with it for a while, but be prepared, if you get serious, to replace it. Plenty of time though, so don`t worry.
As for the mouthpiece, play the 12C until you really figure out the horn and your ability. As your ability grows, you will be able to tell yourself whether or not you need a different mouthpiece. But for now, stick with it. Most everyone starts on a 12C. It`s a good all around mouthpiece to begin with. You will know when it is time to replace it.

Thanks for the replies...I`m gonna stick with the 12c and get good at it before I venture off it....in fact I`m still playing my trumpet with the first mouthpice I`ve had.
