Sure, I`ll try.

The number on top defines how many beats are in each measure, in this case 6. The number on the bottom defines what devision gets the beat, in this case 8, meaning 8th notes. So, each measure has six 8th notes in it.

Now, the next step. This is where it gets specific for the piece it is in. Sometimes, you count it in 6, with each 8th note getting a beat, so one, two, three, four, five, six. Sometimes, you would count it in 2, grouping the six 8th notes in two groups of three. In this case, you would count ONE, 2, 3, FOUR, 5, 6. It can also be counted in 3, grouping the six 8th notes in three groups of two, counted ONE, 2, THREE, 4, FIVE, 6. (Bob your head as you count the spelled out numbers, it helps.)

Hope this helped a bit, and isn`t too confusing. Feel free to ask any more questions if you want.

If you can find any recordings of pieces in 6/8 time, listen to them over and over and try to count along with it. I have been able to teach myself to count time signatures that I found challenging by listening to pieces in the same time signature. Over and over, always trying to count along with it. When I was just starting out many years ago I found this "method" to be useful. I hope it helps you. A challenge for some of you well seasoned guys would be to try counting along with some of the tracks on Stan Kentons` "Adventures in Time". Especially songs like 3x3x2x2x2=72. It`s also a great album so check it out.
