The trombone can't be the same as a trumpet because of one factor alone: slide vs. valves.

Are you talking about jazz or classical?
Because jazz trumpet sounds terrible at times, but classical trumpet is bearable (I guess)
Trombone has a more dignified sound when played well in the upper ranges
Also, which instrument can slide up to notes?

Tromba=trumpet in italian
One=big in italian

Like Violine- big viol.

Ah... but there are more similarities!
Both are cylindrical brass instruments, pitched only an octave apart, both based on a fundamental of concert Bb, both built on the harmonic series in seven different lengths of tubing. As I'm sure you know, every valve combination correlates to a slide position. A lot of the tuning problems are the same (same partial tendencies). Just because we change the length of tubing in a different manner, we're still just changing the harmonic series we wish to deal with at that time.
Where the differences really split off is not the mechanical nature of the horns, but their role in the orchestra/band. And neither in that respect is better or worse, I honestly think it's the personality of the player that decides which role they tend to want to play. That's why everyone thinks what they play is best.
The problem is, I think that when most kids are in that first day of band chosing instruments, I doubt they really know what they're getting themselves into. I picked trombone in 4th grade because I was fascinated by the slide. Nothing more. I knew nothing of the primarily supportive role the low brass play. I think if teachers really took the time to educate and demonstrate the role of these instruments, better choices could be made. thoughts?

plyrseag, what jazz trumpet players have you listened to? You should check out guys like Roy Hargrove, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Art Farmer, and Dizzy Gillespie. All great players who make the trumpet sound great in a jazz setting. And there are countless more. The names I listed are just some of the more famous ones.

Oh, man, and how could I forget Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, and of course the founder of the jazz trumpet, the great Louis Armstrong? Also, three of my favorite modern players are Wayne Bergeron, Jim Rotondi, and Terrell Stafford.

Last time we had to play with a bagpipe group, they told us they tuned to A 453
Given the choice, I'd rather get paper cuts between all my fingers and toes than play with bagpipes.

Yeah I agree. I would never want to play with a piper, unless I too was playing pipes. That would work just fine for me. For some reason, that god awful not-in-tuneness sound is just beautiful music to my ears!

i would say the trombone is better
because trumpet is exact at the notes but playing the trombone it all deals with sound and can just be so awesome

Huh???

Unfortunately I know several trumpet players who couldn't play a correct notes to save their lives. And if you can't play notes correctly on a trombone, then you're not contributing much to your ensemble.

Notes are the easy part. Playing them with a good sound is the hard part. On ALL instruments.
