I have recently checked into buying a soprano trombone...basically for the fun of it. The only model that I have seen that is currently in production is the one by Yamaha which is like $400 i think. But what are your opinions on soprano trombones?

Ok here is my opinion. Fist of all I have a Jupiter. I truly enjoy it as it gives us T-bones a chance to scream and that piercing tone trumpets have, its great fun. However, most music does not call for unless you are playing some really strange and obscure orchestral piece. I normally use it for jazz ensemble as I find it gives me equal footing with trumpets and Saxes. It is by no means necessary but I greatly enjoy it. It allows me to scream with the trumpets, play my tenor for ballads and lead work and crank out the soprano for the fusion charts. The problem is most people would still prefer trumpet so I don`t know how much use you will get out of it. I actually believe that the soprano has a better tone since it is naturally in tune and is mellower. The whole myth about it being unable to handle fast parts is a load of crap by the way. How do you play fast on tenor trombone? By double, triple and doodle tonguing right? Just do the same thing for soprano and you`ll be fine, it`ll be difficult but MOST trumpet music is playable as long as its not insanely fast in which case leave it to the valves.

Basically, the soprano trombones are more for the fun of it. They are fun to play, but have no real use but just to scream.

i thought of something a soprano tromboen could be used for, actually several things,
1. a trombone embsomble
2. a lamp
3. something to hit against the wall
4. scream on
5. learn how to play it and out play trumpets
6. ....drink holder...yah...
