I was looking into mouthpieces awhile back, and found that some mouthpieces could have a satin finish. This, inevitably raised the question of "what is the purpose of a satin finish?" When the mouthpiece has a satin finish, the silver (or gold) looks opaque. So what's it for?

I've heard of horns having satin finishes (i.e., the Edwards trombones), but never have I seen anything about satin mouthpieces. Where did you see the satin mouthpieces?

if you look to the right, there should be pictures rotating, a few of which display the satin mouthpiece.

The satin finish is just for looks. It looks nice, but for a mouthpiece, just go with what feels good. Don't worry about what everyone else has if it works for you and you sound great, keep it.
