I only recently discovered the wonder that is "slide-o-mix".Living in Ireland,theres no access to good accessories for brass players,so I'm just wondering if anyone has some good sites to buy stuff (including slide o mix).Cheers for any help,Pat.

theres many places online, but if you want to know what truely is the best, look in the slide doctor's website. I love slide o mix, But heres what he says about slide o mix, which is all true from first hand experence. http://www.slidedr.com/sickslide.htm


but he says that slide o mix causes a blue slime type stuff to build up in the slide. This, because of so many players not cleaning their slide out, causes the slide to slow down. He recommends and tells about types of lubs in that page.

As with many trombonists, the choice of slide lubrication is personal...whatever works best for your particular horn. I have a King 3B Plus, and have used Conn Formula 3, Superslick, and Tromotine, but found that SOM is the lube that gets my slide working the best.
You may have to experiment yourself, but it seems that you have tried SOM, and found it works the best for your horn. If that's the case, then you should use it.
The negative reports about it are only because players aren't cleaning their slides like they should. If you have good maintainence of your horn, you should have no problems.

Thanks guys for the feedback.It isn't easy getting good accessories in Ireland so the web is the best shot.I gotta agree with sackbutt(spekt right?),you really gotta go to town cleaning the slide before treating the slide.Cheers once again,Pat.

I'm not actually sure what that meant, but you do know to also clean the inside of the outside slide, right? thats where the main build up is. That can be done with a trombone cleaning rod. wwbw.com has a yahama one that I use. its very very basic, cheese cloth of some sort of coth is needed. But if you really want clean for a definate, check out REKE (sp?) cleaning rod. It has a sleeve and a brush on it, more expensive, but I'd say worth it.

In my experience, those pre-made sleeves just don't work well. They're good for a quick swab out of the outer slide, but for a good cleaning just don't do the trick. I prefer to use unbleached, extra coarse cheese cloth. Done correctly, it works very well. Also, putting a drop or two of oil (Al Cass or something of the sort) down the slide can help pull some of that gunk out.
As for which lube is best??? Honestly, I think they all work really well... as long as you use them correctly, which many people don't.
When I do any kind of clinic at a school or something, the first thing I do is go over how to do that stuff right. Then I get into the other stuff.
