Um... ok....
This is quite possibly the dumbest comment I have read on here. I'm just hoping I'm having a slow day not getting the sarcasm.
However, if you are serious, you, dear, have a LOT to learn about orchestral playing. There ISN'T one instrument more or less important in that setting. We are all colors set up to create music.
As for trombones, we are often used prominently in the loud sections, specifically because of our power at hand. You want soft? Go stick with your Mozart and Haydn. Cause clearly you've never heard Brahms, Mahler, Tchaik, Wagner, Stravinsky, Shosty, and countless other composers that write for our power.
Bassoons and oboe have the floor in orchestra.... Um... sure. Maybe now and then, but always? Seriously? Um, no.
And then the kicker. The only brass with a main role is horn? Wow... Clearly you are the one never having heard an orchestra.
Absurd. Sounds more like some young, inexperienced high school player speaking without thinking and trying to turn music into something it is not, a competition.

lol, I apologize. I was having a long week at band camp, and was sun stupid
however, after me realizing my ignorance, it is time for the trombonist who commented to admit theirs, becuase trombones don't have THE FLOOR, but are also important, so I apologize for saying that!
lastly, please don't address me as dear, I am a male, lol

AHH! HELLO! are you experineced in the field of music? I may only be a sophomore, but music is just about ALL competition! Whether it be auditions or battling for principal, and perhaps even popularity, music is constant competition.
I guess also I was just mad at trumpets when I was speaking, becuase at my school, they only wail, even when the bassoon (me) needs to be heard. In my experience, there are no non professional trumpet players who can play soft!
again, I apologize for the ignorant comment, I was truly having a bad week, so sorry for offending you guys! lol
but also, saying trombones have an orchstra floor was ignorant in itself, come on now

Well, yes, I am experienced. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in trombone performance, I play in 2 symphonies, teach a brass class at a high school, and have 21 private students. So, yes, I can say WITHOUT DOUBT that music is NOT a competitive thing. Sure, you have to audition to get in, but once that is done, we are ALL equals on stage. No one instrument is more or less important than any other. EVERYONE "has the floor" in an orchestra. To say a particular instrument is more or less important than another is simply immature and ignorant.
I'm not trying to offend, but the real world is completely different from high school. We play to make music, not to be better than anyone. We aren't here to compete, we are here to create. There is no “battling for principle”, and definitely no “popularity” contests. There may be that in high school, (actually, I know there is) but not in the real world.
Oh, and I called you "dear" because your picture looks like a girl. Sorry. I take it that's not you? ok....

I have had a lot of garbage going on, but that Is no excuse for being plain out rude, so I apologize!
look at this in the positive light, after what gumby said, I am no longer the stupidest comment on here, LMAO!
and to be honest, trombone sounds WAY better than the French Horn anyday!
Gumby, please tell me that was sarcasm!
at least I am comforted to know music isn't as competive outside of highschool as I thought, thanks fr clarifying that with me!
as for my picture, I am always changing it to whatever, lol <Added>as for popularity, I was alluding to say popular singers and such, not so much orchestra, lol

Hey the only good thing about Gumby is to melt him!
LMAO!
Speaking of which, Phil is back under the name PhilMcC I need to mail the administrator, becuase once someone gets kicked off, they shouldn't be allowed back under a difeerent name!
Phil was nothing shy of a lonely forum troll!
Anyways, back on the trombone subject, I felt so bad for my friend, he got a new trombone, it turned out to be a Blessing (from my knowledge, they are poor instruments, correct?)

I depends what he was playing on before...if he had a student model, then he definately went up a step...not necessarily on quality of craftsmanship, but he probably went from small to large bore. If he bought what I think, an Artist B-88, it's not that bad. It's actually based on the Conn 88H I believe. It's tagged as 'professional' (?), but I guess it serves more as an intermediate model...It's not as good as the Conns and Bachs or the Yamaha Xeno (anybody tried one of those?), let alone the Shires, Edwards, Schilke, etc, but I guess it can be a good budget solution if he wanted to get a large bore without paying the price of a top-end professional model. Just because his previous horn was a Bach or a Yamaha doesn't mean it was a great trombone. On the other hand, he probably could have found a used 88H or 42B for pretty much the same price he payed his Blessin...
<Added>
to avoid confusion : ''(Anybody tried one of those?)''. Talking about the Xeno there
