Heya.

I got a Jupiter Soprano for Christmas. Does anyone know anything about the instrument? I play the tenor currently. This instruments serial code is:
H05742
JST-314

I'm just concerned as to the quality. There is a black strip right at the end of the bell, near the ridge, that I think is an unlaquered section. Also, the inner slide is cloudy in a section, like it had been scrubbed with a steel wool.

Lastly, the spit comes out green.

It plays and sounds fine, are these things to worry about?
Thanks.
Tim

Man, I've been wanting one of those for a LONG time. Where'd you find it? I don't think it's a problem that the spit is coming out green. Just snake out the slide and give the thing a bath.

This is called a slide trumpet and a soprano trombone...just depends on who you talk to. Its usually found with trumpet players since it takes a trumpet mouthpiece.

The slide, i've never heard of that happening before. depending on how much you play on the horn it could really become a problem (or at least I'd say). the finish on the slide could rub off and the slide becomes very rough and hard to move no matter how much grease you put on it.

The green, is the horn used, and how long had it been sitting before you got it. It could just be the copper in the plating inside the horn oxidizing, just clean it out. use a trombone snake and a little bit of dawn to knock it out--the dawn won't do anything to the horn, just use it moderately and be sure to rinse it out throughly before you let it dry.

No, the horn is used and new.

There's not much I can do as to the slide, as the return period was only 1 month, unless any of you know any preventative measures to stop the problem.

I have a Bach tenor trombone, too, that also has green spit. I've cleaned it plenty of times (and thoroughly) and even the time I play it immediately after the spit will be green.

Any ideas?

I can't answer much to the sop bone, I've never played one. I did have a friend in college that bought one (Jupiter brand sop) as a toy to mess around with. Not the greatest quality, but fun now and then.

That's the thing. Jupiter, while they have been making leaps and bounds lately and are coming out with some decent instruments, have always been known to make mass-produced crap. You may have bought a lemon.

Now, as for the green spit. What do you use to clean the horn and what do you use to lube it?

I use a ripped up T-shirt on a string. It's a tight fit and I feel like it does clean well, should I get a snake?

And I use the bottle of oil that they gave me with the instrument, Jupiter brand.
