I've just switched from playing my Conn 88HYO to the Bach 42BO. 88HYO, other than its tone which was deemed too bright by my band-mates, was a wonderful horn with excellent response over my whole range. The Bach 42BO on the other hand, has a much darker sound that blends well with the band, however its response in the higher register is very sluggish.
I'm thinking of using the mouthpiece to compensate for the slow response. The 2 mouthpieces I have are the Dennis Wick 4AL and the 4AL Heavytop. The Heavytop produces a louder sound with the same amount of air, so I thought maybe it's better at solving the 42BO's response problem. Nevertheless it's making the 42BO sound way too overpowering (even though the tone is perfectly fine. That's the good thing about 42BO, loud but not blasty).
So do you guys think the 4AL will solve the response problem as well as the loudness problem?
