Hey guys, I'm about to graduate HS and am going to college. I have been playing for my 6th year now and have been interested in upgrading from my student trombone. I have been looking at many trombones, and this is mainly for Jazz, big band, small combo, etc. I was looking to get an Edwards or Shires, but it's too expensive and I'm still inexperienced enough to know what direction I want to go in terms of playing. So, as for now, I'm thinking of mostly a Getzen 3508Y or a Yamaha 891Z or maybe a King 3B. Anyway, thoughts from you guys? Thanks a bunch!

There are MANY options for jazz horns. You really should consider the option of buying a vintage horn. I'm thinking of an old Conn (preferably from the Elkhart-era), King or Bach (New York or Mount Vernon).

For a silvertone/silversonic King or a Bach New York, you might pay more than you would pay for a new horn, but you would get something amazing. There aren't many modern horns that even come close to them.

There's a lot of good choices in old Conn's too.
I love the 10H (same as 6H, but with a Coprion bell). The pure copper bell gives it a dark tone, and you could blow hard enough to break down a wall without even distorting your sound.
12H (4Hish with Coprion) is a very small horn (smaller than a King 2B), so it feels small and is very easy to play, and the Coprion bell makes it sound bigger than it actually is. I have one for sale by the way

If going with a King, Conn or Bach, vintage is more often than not better than new, and cheaper (old Conns are often an easy steal on eBay, I recently bought a 1952 silver plated(!!!) 6H for under 600$!).

Yamaha 891Z is a good choice. Better IMHO than the 697Z/897Z, which I find too small, suitable for leading, but I am convinced that the 891Z is more versatile. (Same for 3B against 2B, but silvertone 2B's are legendary for a reason!)

I'm a little late to reply but will add my 2 cents.

Again, I like LeTromboniste's suggestions of vintage Bach, Conn, and King. Don't be swayed by the latest rage of jumping on the boutique horn makers bandwagon. These are small independent labels trying to carve out a niche for themselves but they are charging high premium prices without having the history needed to justify such stiff prices. They do a lot of good marketing and PR'ing, some even go a little too far to openly bash and criticize the longevity brands, which is a big turnoff for me.
