Thank you,
Rich

King trombones aren`t good, if you want a good trombone there are two options a Bach-Stradivarius or a Conn.
I played a king once, now I have a Bach 42A you can feel the difference
And keep on playing the trombone

King trombones aren`t bad, i have a King 607 semi-pro trigger trombone and it is really good. It shouldn`t really matter what brand it is just aslong as your son is comfortable with it, then that is the right one for him, i chose mine by trial and error.
If you are still having trouble, or want any tips about trombones send me an email to, hardcoresk8r@iptimus.com.au
Happy hunting

The King 2B is the Cadilac of trombones when it comes to jazz, but if your son is just beggining i would not advise buying him such an expensive horn just yet.

Yup, I agree with Andrew. Since your son is just starting to play, get him one that has a lower resistence. I dunno what brand is suitable coz we are in different countries. I am from Singapore and i started playing the Yamaha one when I was just a beginner. Then slowly got promoted to Besson trombones. It was great but not many people out there knew of this brand. You can try seaching for it on the internet. Good luck.

Kings aren`t that bad. But don`t buy it off E-bay. Search around the town at music shops, and maybe pawn shops. He needs to try the instrument before you buy it, if you buy it online it could have something wrong with it or it could have bad tone.

King 2B is the greatest Lead jazz trombone in history. It is a high resistance horn made for small mouthpieces. It has a mellow tone and the best high register characteristic of any tenor trombone. It is not a good beginners instrument. Conn and Bach make good beginners horns and so does King. A 2b is for an accomplished lead solo player not for a middle school beginner.
You can trust E-bay for good instruments. I suggest using escrow for your purchase.

Actually Ruben, I gotta disagree with you. The Bach 42A is a good trombone, but not for someone who is just starting out or who doesn`t have much experience on the horn. The questions that need to be asked here are:
1. What styles of music will the trombone be used for?
2. Will the trombone be used for this style exclusively or will other styles(such as concert band music and jazz music) be involved?
Back to the Bach 42A. If this person chooses to play jazz music only, the large bore bach will be impractical due to the nature of jazz music. A small bore King or Conn or even a small bore Bach would be much more practical. If you are wanting something that can do both I would suggest a medium bore trombone such as a Bach 36, the newly reintroduced King 3b+ or a used Conn 78H(sadly out of production).

Ruben,
Why do you think that King`s are not good? Have you had bad experiences with them? I dislike Bachs but I still think that they are good trombones but just not for me. I prefer Conns for classical and concert band literature and Kings for jazz.

If he as a musician doesn`t have a set idea in his mind as to what sort of horn he wants, I would reccomend a medium large bore with a trigger. For a student, I would suggest a serious look at the Yamaha trombones. These instruments are reliable and well built and will last a player a long time if taken care of. They are very consistent, so you can buy one online with little fear of getting a poor horn. Bach is notorious for quality control, so I would reccomend them only for professionals who know what they want and can play test their horn before buying it. Conn`s are wonderful, but are probably too big of a horn for a begining student. So take a look at the Yamaha. The intermediate model currently produced are the YSL-446 for a medium large bore with an F attatchment, and the pro model is the YSL-684 for the same. You can get a used one online without worrying too much about the build quality of the horn. Good luck.

I suggest a conn. There is no need to have that trombone right now. it would take a while for him to adjust to it.

My advice is to buy an older student horn with a good slide--King Cleveland, Olds Ambassador, or Conn Director. Pre-1965, to be on the safe side, though there were some good ones made later. These horns are designed for beginners, the quality is outstanding, there are lots of them around, and they`re inexpensive. After playing some, he`ll know more what he wants.
We need to be more careful when giving advice to others. Someone looking for a King 2B jazz horn doesn`t need to be recommended a Bach 42B--it`s not even similar.
And why say things like "King trombones aren`t good, if you want a good trombone there are two options a Bach-Stradivarius or a Conn."?
I have played dozens of trombones and I`ve never seen a major brand that didn`t put out ANY good horns. I have played really great Selmers, Bessons, Getzens, Bueschers, Martins, and of course great Conns, Bachs, and Kings. I currently have (among eight trombones) a `58 LA Olds Super that stands up to any jazz trombone I`ve ever played.
I`ve also played newer Conns, Bachs, and Kings that played (and looked) like they were made on the Friday before the start of fishing season. The age of the instrument matters as much as the brand. Just like Fender guitars or Harley motorcycles, these brands have gone through changes of ownership and location which affected the quality.
You can`t just play two or three horns and say "this brand is no good, don`t buy it".
I played a King 3B Silversonic in high school and frankly wasn`t that crazy about it, but I see many players who are much better than I playing that horn so I wouldn`t say it`s not a good horn. Different horns suit different people.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
