Probably the hardest solo to play is the solo from In the Mood not for hard notes and rhythms, but because everyone knows the song and expects a certain solo to be played.

The first movement (Allegro non Malto) of Vivaldi`s Winter. It`s really fast and high. Christian Lindberg does a really good job with it.

There is a series of pieces named after flowers (like Lily, Crysanthemum, Marigold, Hyacinthe etc.) and they`re generally pretty difficult, only third year though. Also, "Stars in a Velvety Sky" is really hard (at least it was for me because its at least a grade 5 piece and i played it after about a year)

I believe that Blue Bells of Scotland is difficult to play. It took me 3 years to have it to perfection and im a professional

The bone solo is God Bless the Child was pretty difficult, not because of notes or rhythms, but because getting the right style can be tricky. It`s a beautiful solo though. I absolutely loved playing it.

the hardest solo ive ever heard/seen is the one eveybody knows. It is usualy a simple song that a second or third year player can play. It often is slow and long notes no hard runs prety easy octive often in the key of F or B-flat.
Because you can play them well but there so exposed and so vulnerable. somthing fast and high you can maby slide through a note or even short run and well fake it a little and it still sounds good. try to fake a whole note that is tied to 5 more of them.
but dont worry if it gets to hard go sleep with the neighbors wife. that always helps.

Jon I agreee that tbonology is really tough and if the question was what is the most technically challenging solo you have ever played id agree with you there i think. So to make it easier try sleeping with the neighbors wife.

Ferdinand David
Concertino in Eb.
not necassarily a HARD piece to play but it was hard to get all the inflections and definitly hard to get my heart into that song.
another thing, everytime i stand up to play changes in a big band or a jazz combo. UGH worst thing in the world, hate them changes.

Hardest solo hmmm
In brass banding, its probably boulevard (lip slurs galore)
orchestral. ..BOLERO , without a doubt, try playing top concert Db`s in a packed concert hall!
solo: probably blue bells, due to breathing problems, or some other arthur pryor numbers are difficult.
Jazz: i think probably stardust. easy to play, difficult to play well (especially up in the clouds!)
But bolero wins hands down for me.... if you want to hear it done properly listen to the vienna philharmonic`s recording 99. Ian bousfield (principal trombone) is awesome in it,plays with ease... probably the best trombone player in the world.

Bolero is not only hard because of the range... but the fact that it STARTS on a high Bb after not play for 8 minutes.... good god. My favorite recording is Joe Alessi doing it in the New york phil with leonard bernstein conducting. Seeing that Ravel wrote Bolero for a jazz trombone player Alessi interpreted the solo perfect.
but then i agian, i just love Joe Alessi. Man has the sound!
