Hi im a trombone player, im 16 and am currently attending wes conn music camp. i am 1st trombone in the top band so i have to play alot, and alot of high notes. When ever i play trombone alot, i always get this thing under my lip. it hurts alot and when i play it hurts even more. With out this little bumb i can reach a high e. with this thing i am lucky if i can hit a high Ab. Nobody else i know seems to get this sore when they play, i was wondering if anyone else gets it and if so how do i make it better because i have a cobncert on saturday and i need to play. please respond asap if you know what to do for this. (it is not a pimpel, its sorta like a callous but it isnt, it hurts alot)

um...i used to get a thing like that on my top lip when I screamed on trumpet. I play both trombone and trumpet by the way. I just needed to build up my top lip until i didn`t get it anymore.

Hello,
My guess is that the bump on your lip is caused by way too much tightness in the lips. This happens when great demands are placed upon the lips and so they tense up. Sometimes when a tooth is not growing straight it can rup against the lip during those TENSE moments causing a cut. My recommendation is that you hang in there and try to relax the face as much as possible. When camp is over, spend a lot of time at home, practising warm ups and exercises. While practising, remember that you need to play more from the diaphram muscles down in your stomach. The more you transfer the tension from your face to your diaphram muscles, the less likely you will have these bumps on your inner lip. Good luck and never give up. Martin
