I`m 13 and going into my fourth year playing trombone. My range is from an F below the staff to the triple octave G (being very out of tune on the G). My family and friends say I`m doing fine, but they`re my family and friends. I just kind of wanted to get a second opinion on my range and things I could do to improve it.

I am in my fith year and that is about what i can do as far as high goes. For low nots i can play chromatics going down to 7th position on pedal tones. I dont know if this helps.

DONT WORRY ABOUT HOW HIGH OR LOW YOU CAN PLAY!!!!!!! there are a hundred million other things we have to think about as musicians. Range one day will be something you wont EVER have to think about because you have a GREAT fundamental in the middle register. focus on a good sound good tone and good articulation. THATS what makes money as a bone player, not about how high you can squeel. BUT being forced to answer your question your doing great. but remember you still have TONS of other things to work on

i just want to make sure that you do get what im saying wrong, dont worry abotu how high you can play. it will come to NO MATTER WHAT!!! worry about the essential of musicianship.
and a phrase i love to say. Its better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it! soo there keep up the good range and remember to think about the basics too

I`ve been playing for almost six years. One thing that held me back, this past year was the fact that i used to be able to play high b flat (or higher) and at some point I lost my range and couldn`t play high f. in advanced stuff you usually don`t play over high b-flat. But you play high g`s often, and a`s not so often. Its very agravatring when you can`t play something because of range. So If I were you everyday I would work on maintaining your range, this will expand it. To do this play longtones, high and low, lipslurs, and other stuff.

also ive been wanting to add this but keep forgetting, work on sightsinging. Pick up some parts from some of your bands and try to SING all the parts you have. This is something that has been pounded into my head by a teacher of mine. He talks about a time in college when the brass sectino of the chicago symphony came to their school and SANG their parts but not only did they sing it they sang it in tune and very powerfully. Recently i have started applying this to all my playing and have noticed that playing high is EASIER because i know what the note sounds like. so work on that.
also, playing the notes in tune make the notes come out easier. try playing a high Bb in 3rd then try playing it in flat 1st. see which one comes out easier.

Yeah i too am fourth year now. I used to be able to hit high Bb`s (above the top o` the staff Bb) and a bit higher, but then i got braces (dun dun dun!). I lost my place as the only freshman in 1st chair last year, and my range is only coming back now. I haven`t practices since 7th grade, so tht might have made it worse :P I say as long as you can get the f`s your ok. If you need to build up up your range do wht i do: steal 1st parts, since the use higher range. That should build you up to G`ish range, depending on wht you play. Then go back to a 2nd or third part and bring it up an octave. If you keep doing tht (and the director doesnt notice) you should have a strong Bb and above.
