It really doesn`t matter AT ALL how high you can play. Or how low, or how loud. The only thing that matters is how well you can play the music you are playing. If you have a piece that you can`t play high enough for, work on range. Same with low, and loud. But don`t just focus on "high note competitions". Leave that for the trumpet players with the big heads.

I will say this: Playing high notes often comes at the expense of tone quality and musicality. The trombone is not an instrument that is based around how how you can play. If I had to concentrate on one thing, it would not be range at all. It would be improving the sound of the notes within 4 leger lines of the staff. That said, high notes add a nice touch in any type of jazz music. I really don`t know that there is any limit to how high I can play. I can play a 5 octave Bb scale, starting with pedal Bb. I wouldn`t aim for something like that, really, because it`s fairly impracticle. But, even then...If you can play a triple Bb, you will be hitting a regular high Bb no problem.

Good point Luke, keep working on great tone, and that big powerful phat trombone sound, and range will come naturally. Juts make sure your aiming for sound quality and beauty, not just quantity and height. High notes do come natually, and when you start playing a lot more up there, then you should work on tone quality, and more importantly, intonation, in the upper register, but until then, just work on sound quality. That is much more impressive then screaming like a trumpet.
Although, it is fun when you can....

I thought I needed to work on my trombone skills the other day, so I walk into a music store and ask for a good trombone book. The guy hands me an Arbans book and says "You mean the bible?"

I'm not gonna join in the "how high I can play" part, but I do want to add one dissenting opinion. while you do need to always pay attention to tone, tune and time, range is something that should be worked on in both directions. not obsessed over, but consider this. you don't want to go to a gig, get handed a chart and not have the range to handle the music ON THE FIRST READ DOWN. so yes, there is a certain range that certain professional circles are going to assume you'll have... and if you want to get called back, you had better have it.
so what is the compromise here? A great bone player once told me. "Don't obsess over how good you are or are not... just focus on constantly getting better". i'll take that another step. don't obsess over how your range stacks up to others. just work on it, every day, both directions, using correct technique and with good intonation.. and get better. it will come with time. so instead of thinking "oh gee, joe schmakatelli can play higher than me"... think.."ok, i own a G, i'm gonna slowly work on the next half step above". work with a teacher, preferably someone very well versed in embouchure issues that can diagnose and make sure that there is not some fundamental issue holding you back, and practice smartly. security in the upper register takes years. be patient and enjoy making music!

the notes that you can get to are fine... im pretty sure the notes you can reach (both the high ones and low ones) are at the standard you need to play for 4th grade. i am doing 5th grade so im pretty sure your going just fine. tell your family and friends they were right .
and one more tip for you, make sure you practice your scales for AMEB, i got the highest marks for all the oral work and playing work but i keep wrecking up my scales so they are not aloud to give me higher than a C+. so make sure you practice your scales aswell as the other stuff.
hope i helped you
