I want my slide to be super sweet slick. I use trombontine right now but is slidomix better? Also What is the best way to clean my slide real good? It moves pretty good right now but it sounds like there is crud in it or something?

Wipe the outside of the inner slide off really well. Run a cleaning rod through it and make sure you get it nice and clean inside. Then take the cleaning rod, add a new piece of fabric, and dip it in a brass polish, such as Brasso. Run this through the outer slide, so that it cleans up and copper oxide deposits. This is generally what causes the grinding sound that can`t be wiped out. After this, wipe the crook out with a snake, and then clean the slides with the rod and a fresh piece of fabric. Finally, run water through it to rinse everything out. Re-lube, and put the horn back together.

Yup.
As for lube, it`s more personal than anything. I know people that live on Trombotine, but personally, I wouldn`t touch it. Slide-O-Mix is decent stuff, but personally, I live on SuperSlick. I love it, always have. It`s a little more consistent and longer lasting than Slide-O-Mix. More important, make sure you have a good spray bottle. The Super Slick bottle is pretty good, as well as many others. If you don`t spray it, you might as well just leave it dry of lube.

Honestly just from my own experience. Pond`s cold cream and a small spray bottle of water can make your slide slicker than most. That`s what i`ve been using and what my director has used for about 20 years or so....

Yeah, I`ve heard lots of "alternate" types of lube. My personal favorite is Pledge, the cleaning stuff. About half and half of that and water makes the slide real nice. I stopped using it, however, cause you have to spray it pretty often. The plus side is you can get the lemon scented Pledge, which makes the area around you smell nice. A change for some of us... Hehehe

I use vaseline for the slide and motor oil on the tuning slide. Some times when i run out of vaseline ill use peanut butter (chunky of course)
Really though if you slide sounds like it has crap in it alot of times that is caused by burrs on the end of your slide. dry your slide compleatly and clean the inside of the outer slide with a snake then see if it still is raspy. If so you should take it to the slide dr. He/she will clean any imperfections out of the slide and your good do go. Oh btw peanutbutter oil by it self works really well on like a jupitor horn. Id never use it on any thing better.

I agree with the guy that uses SuperSlick. Works like a charm, smooth as butter. I want to try this Trombontine stuff, to see if it works better. Can anyone explain what Trombotine is?

Trombotine is slide grease that comes in a touthpaste tube. I don`t think it holds a candle to SuperSlick, but that`s just me.

For that person that uses lemon pledge... STOP!!! Back in the days when Minnick was fixing peoples slides in LA he used pledge to find out where the dents and whatever on the slide. Well the dudes in LA caught on and thought he had a new type of lube... but really it IS NOT a good lube because people got pnemonia(sp?). its not really a good thing.
Also i believe that EACH slide works well with different lubes.. i dunno no my edwards i like to use slide-o-mix and on my king i use trombotine.

Yeah, I did stop using Pledge. Although it does feel good, and smell good for that matter, it`s really not something you want to be breathing in.
As for slide particularalities, (is that a word?) I totally agreee, but again, it`s still personal. I use Superslick for all my horns, my Edwards T350, Bach 16M, and Holton 181. I have noticed that the Bach likes Slide-O-Mix, but as it also likes Superslick, I just can`t justify carrying around all kinds of different lubes. The Edwards slide, in all it`s precision, probably would like Slide-O-Mix, I should try it.

Slid-O-Mix is very good to make your slide super slick. TO CLEAN THE SLIDE GET A SNAKE AND CLEAN IT . I clean mine with a trombone snake not a trumpet snake.

You can buy it at most music stores. Personally, I think it is crap, and I don`t know why army or whatever bands would use it. Unless they either have to, or they get it for free. Come on now, SuperSlick and a spray bottle. Nothin else matters.

I was a keen Slide-o-mix user until I got a old Conn 88H when I found that the Slide-o-mix was a little too thin for the old slide.
I tried a couple and settled on Trombotine which ensures I have a very smooth slide and lasts for a long time between reapplications.
This seems to be another of those topics where we get people swearing that x or y product is the only one to use. The best course of action is to try out the different options and see what works best for YOU and YOUR slide
