Hey, just wondering if anyone can help me. . .
I`m thinking of getting my lip pierced tomorrow - just a stud in the centre - will I still be able to play trombone?? I mean - I know it`ll be too sore at first, but my next lesson is just over a week and I need to be able to play!!
:/
Please help lol!

I know a few people with their lip peirced, and while it does effect your playing, it doesn`t make it impossible. Some people I know take it out to play, some others leave it in. Just make sure it is low enough that it won`t get in the way of the mouthpiece. And remember, you won`t be able to play much if at all for a while, but you do get used to it. And, once it is healed, you can take it out to play. Or at least, if you can get it out of the way, make sure you get a stud for it, not a ring.

DON`T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And if you don`t believe a violist, here is an entire discussion among trombonists on this subject:

PS; I have never pierced anything nor played the trombone by the way. Don`t ask me how I know about all this...

If the peircing you want covers the area where your mouthpiece touched your ips, then most definately, peice something else. But I have seen several that are nowhere near that area. Lower on the lip, closer to the chin for one.
By the way, when you take it out to play, air does not escape, that is an old wives tale. Trust me, I`ve marched with people that play plenty loud that have that pierced and it doesn`t effect anything.

:/ Well I dunno. . .
dammit i REALLY want one, but I dont want it to affect it too much, but then its not like I`m pro or anything.
I read the topic someone posted a link to and what I resent from that is the way everyone assumes peer pressure is teh reason I want. I want it cos I actually adore lip piercings, I know peopel think they`re ugly, but I dont.
What I want is a stud in the centre, JUST below my lip. . . no ring or antyhing. . .
If i do it I`ll do it as soon as I break up for Christmas, that way I wont have to play for a few weeks cos I wont have lessons. . .
Thanks for responses all the same. . . need to think about it!

If you get the stud just below the lip, make sure it is lower than where you mouthpiece touches. If it is that low and out of the way, you will have no problem. Plus, when it heals, you can always take it out to play.
And yeah, I think they rock to. I don`t have my lip pierced personally, but many of my friends do. It`s a personal thing. If you don`t like it, don`t get it. Other than that, don`t talk down to people that have them just cause you don`t like them. It is a free country, after all. At least some of us think that....

I got a friend....Yes i really have one......Anyway she has her uperlip pierrced and she plays obo. Now i dont know how many people have tried to play that @#$!@#$ instrument but i can hardly make it squeek it takes so much preshure. anyway the point is that if she can play an obo with to lip piercings (she has the cat wiskers thing goin on) then you should be able to play the bone. youl need to take a couple weeks off for it to heal though. Um one more thing OUCH!!!!

Becky, you`re taking all the flak very well, and maturely. I didn`t respond initially because (no pun intended)... Erik nailed it on the first reply. After that, well uno what happened.
A fact`s a fact. After the lip has healed properly, continue with life as usual. I would remove the stud or ring, certainly when playing. Strat man Dwight - strategies for all musicians from beginner to pro

Actually, the oboe is completely different, since the reed goes into your mouth and there is nowhere near as much surface area touching as with a trombone mouthpiece. The lip rings themselves could work on oboe, but would never work on bone simply because you have to put the mouthpiece on the outside of your mouth. You could take them out to play, but it would be much easier to just get the stud lower on you chin area. That way, you might not even have to take it out to play, of course, it would be much easier.

I wouldn`t sugest peirching anywhere on the face if you still want to play (muscle stuff), but if you MUST then at least bring your mouthpeice to the piercing shop with you so they know where not to.... *cringe* puncture :P

I and my hubby play a few instruments, trumpet being one of them. He has one lip piercing and I have 2. if u get a hoop done. i don`t advise it, but then again if you have a labret put in or replace the hoop with a labret then all is game. (labret has a flat backing on it that covers beyond just the hole and it stops air from going through.) it`ll be sore for about two weeks, so u might not want to play, but after a month u`ll be fine. just don`t go to the extremes and get one of those big #2 sized holes in your lip... if u do u`ll not only look super crazy, but u`ll also have to get a special piece of jewelry to be able to plug it up without having it blow off your face :s
