Hi everyone, hope you had a great thanksgiving!

Anyway,

I am in high school and have been playing the trumpet for five years now, so I have a pretty good idea of brass playing, (breath support, tounging, etc...) Anyhoo, I want to expand away from trumpet and play all the brass instruments, and I didn`t feel like playing french horn just yet, I think trombones are much cooler. Plus, you can play jazz with a trombone and I absolutley dig jazz.

I went to the music store yesterday and rented a Conn trombone (I have no idea what model or anything) Also, I looked on another website for possible mouthpieces and got a Bach 12C...I hope that`s good. I also bought the Rubank elementary method for trombone, and have started to teach myself bass clef and the slide positions. I can play an E (7th position) up to a G (4th position). I don`t know if I could do anymore than that or not, the fingering chart only had those notes. I do play trumpet, so the upper register probably won`t be as hard.

Please don`t diss on me because I`m a trumpet player, (I know...we`re jerks...but at least I`m trying to be cool). Anybody have any advice for me? What should I be practicing to get started and form good trombone playing habits? Thank you.

this is something that a lot of people get wrong with trombone. There arent ONLY 7 positions. On every trombone the positions are different because they each octave responds differently on the slide. Just physics and sound waves. So what you have to be thinking about when playing is dont think that the slide HAS to be in that certain spot. It has to be in the spot where the horn is in tune. So remember to always have your tuner with you when playing.

oh and remember. Have fun.

one thing i want to correct is. Dont leave your tuner on ALL the time when you play. Because you should learn to depend on your ear. Not to mention when playing in a ensemble pitch will always drift. So if your dead on A440 then well... your out of tune compared to the band who has drifted to A442

A tip....
Mouthpiece buzzing with the tuner. Just buzz in to the mouthpiece no instrument attached and use the tuner and tune your buzz. Do scales and things and then put the mouthpiece back in the horn and shut off the tuner. youll be suprized at your tone quality and you will train your ear up too.

Here`s some advice. HAVE FUN. No matter what. Make sure you practice in some way, if you don`t, you never get better, if you do but hate it or get frustrated, you will get burnt out and quit. So make sure whatever you do you have fun. Remember, it`s only music.... it`s not life and death... yet.

1st position: B flat (lower partial)
F (one octave higher)
G (one octave higher)
(this is where u mite run into som trouble because of how high u go, but keep practicing)
B flat (higher, one octave higher)
D (one octave higher)
practice lip slurring with these, going up and down.

Eric dont you know that (scarcasim here big time) bflat and f are octive intervals. And d and f are octive intervals. Any time you change partials you go up an octive so say your going from bflat top of staff to f midle of satff ish that is up an octive. (ends here)

David that is the best laugh ive had all day. What grade are you in? It sounds like you have agood grasp on partial interval technique but you might want to look in to interval and basic theroy.

Wow, that`s awesome!!! (sarcasm here) I have an 18 octave range! Hehehehe....

But seriously, you`ve got a good grasp on things, especially for being in the 7th grade. Easy mistake, so now ya know!
